I'm really missing not having bread in my new food regime. Is keto bread ok for a low carb diet ? or is it the same problem as with low fat food, so full of other nasty stuff that it defeats the purpose ? If it is ok any recommendation on best one to get ?

You say low carb diet, what amount of carbs are you looking at per day?

I haven't seen many buy keto bread cause it's not really available in shops and online it costs a fortune (along with everything else labelled keto) most that eat keto bread tend to make it themselves but if your only doing low carb and not keto why not look into lower carb breads?

Have you tested after eating bread? Or just cut it out because you are lead to believe that was the best thing to do?
xx

I use Hovis Nimble, smaller slices than normal and about 8.1g carbs and 0.5g sugar per slice, so I have one or two slices per day, usually toasted with poached egg and baby spinach - or as eggy bread.

You can make your own keto bread, there's a 90 second microwave cloud bread recipe I spotted online - uses coconut flour or almond flour (ground almonds) - find some recipes HERE

I tried a 'bread' using almond and coconut flour but it really was much more like a scone than bread. Not unpleasant but not what I would call bread.

If you are able to test then you may be able to tolerate a slice of bread as long as the rest of the meal is low carb. So a piece of toast with bacon and egg, scrambled egg or cheese on toast or an 'open' sandwich with your filling just on 1 slice bread.
So if you really want bread then choose a nice bread that you can enjoy and savour rather than a piece of flavourless white sliced.

thanks for the replies . I seem to spike with any level of carbs to be honest o just looking round for alternatives . I'm still in the new diagnosis stage and trying to reduce my numbers before the visit to the diabetic nurse. not on any medication at this stage even though my numbers were horrendous in the september blood test

I just wonder what you are calling a spike, and what you have eaten when you are getting it.

I bought some wheat gluten so as to be able to get as close as possible to real bread, and have tried various things. I did try a bread making machine, but it is too hard on the risen dough and too fast for it to rise again. I can use it to make the dough though.

My numbers are pretty bad and pre meal its 8.5 -9.5 and then goes up to 12/13 1hour after eating , then back down to 8.5/ 9.5 two hours after eating . Thats on a no carb diet for the last two weeks. I had potato's last night as a test and the levels went up to 14.5 one hour after eating then back down to 9.0 two hours after eating. So I assume I'm very reactive to any carbs . My baseline is still very high and even though it does return to baseline after a couple of hours, I haven't been able to get my BS levels below 8 in the last two weeks of having the meter . Not on any medication yet

If your levels were not so high in the first place then the same after 2 hours would be good as within an expected no more than 2-3mmol/l increase. Your high starting level is perhaps to be expected so soon after your diagnosis.
