Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello. I was diagnosed type 2 a year ago with an hba1c of 109. Since then I have been on the blood sugar diet and then low-ish carbs. My hba1c is now 46 where it has remained the same for the last 6 months. My bmi was 26 last year and is now 24.
Oddly over the last week every time I have taken some exercise (e.g power walk for 45 mins) my sugar level has dropped to around 3.5 and I'm clammy, shaky and feel very odd. I'm not ill, diet not changed so why has this started to happen? Should I be concerned? Is is normal for a type 2? I'm not on any medication either. Thank you for in advance for any advice or tips on how to deal with it. 🙂

Sorry to hear about the lows. Are you on any meds for your diabetes?

PS I love your avatar!

Hi ODM! I guess you are getting lower blood sugars as you have generally lower blood sugar all round. Normal people get blood sugar readings between 3.5 - 8, and can experience those low blood sugar feelings (my husband feels like that if he hasn't eaten in a while and does some exercise). As you are not on any meds, you should be ok. I would suggest having a snack, like some nuts, or a small biscuit to help alleviate the feelings. Well done on your great effort and results 🙂

I agree with @stephknits - if not on medication your 3.5s will be uncomfortable, but should not be particularly threatening.

I’m not quite sure how low carb your low carb is and whether you have increased fats and aimed for ketosis, but perhaps if your carb intake is low but your body has not adapted to burn ketones, your low levels may simply be you running out of energy like any non-D might if active and not eating.

I have seen a number of non-D traces of people who have worn CGM and several of them dip below 4 quite frequently and feel a bit wobbly.

If your lows follow any kind of pattern, perhaps you could add a small amount of carb into the preceding meal?

Ah ok thank you. I'm not very low carb, aim for around 100g a day as I'm vegetarian and do eat low carb bread etc. I just found it odd that this started all of a sudden over the last couple of day. Good to know it's nothing to worry about. It just took me by surprise really as I'd eaten well and although it was a pretty brisk walk it certainly wasn't anything too much. I shall carry something with me then in case it happens again. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply, much appreciated. 🙂

It would be good for you to mention it when you next see your GP or surgery nurse so that they can advise you.

Important to remember that no one here has any medical qualifications or background (except for occasional retired medics!).
