Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, thought I would join you all I have been diabetic for several years. Given the current situation I anticipate there will be lots of information on here and a good support network. I am a nurse not diabetic specialist I hasten to add, but I obviously have some knowledge. I like all diabetics have been isolating for several weeks now and waiting to see what the plan is after the twelve weeks are up. What does anyone think? Given that 1:4 who have sadly died have been diabetic, I am quite concerned that for us it could be quite sometime.

Hiya! All diabetics have NOT been isolating, we are in the main not considered to be 'seriously clinically challenged' (or whatever the phrase is)

What none of us know from the statistics published is what category the 1:4 were in. How many were eg over 80, resident in care or nursing homes anyway because of their other co- morbidities; had very poorly controlled/under medicated/wrongly diagnosed as T2 when really LADA etc etc ad infinitum?

Partha Kar and Diabetes UK have requested further and better details and until everyone gets that - everyone however well qualified they happen to be - is purely guessing!

Welcome @Siamese Cat 🙂 Yes, there’s lots of info here and also a lot of friendly helpful people🙂

Regarding the additional risk for people with diabetes, I’m waiting to hear a lot more detail. I think knowing things like age, diabetes type, BMI, ethnicity, etc will be far more useful.

This is truly amazing and so informative, its lovely to know there are those who reply with constructive answers and add food for thought as it were...

I also noticed that the name diabetic was being bandied about in relation to Corona virus with no definition of what type.
At least Miriam Stoppard finally pointed out that type 1 and type 2 diabetes are completely different conditions in that type 1 is an auto immune condition and type 2 is lifestyle related.
This is true except my type 2 isn't lifestyle related it was caused by radiotherapy and medication following breast cancer treatment and I have been able to reverse it and be discharged by the doctor by cutting out all carbs from my diet.
Another thing I have noticed however is that since I had a mild case of Coronavirus my blood glucose has fallen thru the floor, in that I have only seen one meter reading over 8 in two months and that was following fish in batter and chips (naughty!), 8.1 two hours after eating and back to 6.3 at bedtime.
Two months ago I had daily readings of between 7.0 and 8.0 on waking, 6.0-7.00 before eating and 7.0 to 8.00 two hours later.monthly average between 7.0 and 7.5.
Now well under 7.0 on waking, 5.0-6.0 before eating and low 6s two hours later, my monthly average is now 6.1.
This is using different meters and different batches of strips.
At the moment I can eat and drink what I want, almost!

Welcome to the forum @Siamese Cat

Yes coronavirus and the government advice has been a hot topic for weeks now, and different folks have either followed the guidance or gone further and fully isolated (either in advice from their Dr, or because of their own worries and circumstances.

Fire away with any questions you have - we are a friendly bunch and there are lots of years or lives Diabetes experience on the boards 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Siamese Cat

I have recently read that info from DUK that @MrDaibetes posted the link to. It was updated to day and addresses the recent news headlines, with an additional article on that. Well worth a read.

Glad that you have found the forum and look forward to hearing more from you.
