Welcome, I'm a newbie myself, only diagnosed about 10 days ago, but I received so much support and initial information from the lovely people on this forum. After being initially very upset, confused and angry, I've now calmed myself and I'm determined that I will control the diabetes, and not the other way around. I'm sure your husband will also come to think this way in a few days. I'm on Metformin, and I've changed my diet radically, and stepped up my exercise levels, cycling on my exercise bike for 5 miles every morning and walking a lot. I don't want to pre-empt things but I have to say that today I feel better than I have done for the last couple of years. I have so much more energy, I wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, and it's only now that I realise how unwell I was for such a long time (not one for doctors I just kept putting off a visit until I couldn't ignore my symptoms any more). I don't weigh myself and wasn't radically overweight but I'm definitely noticing a difference already which can only be good. I wish your husband the very best and would encourage him to join the forum, it's been invaluable for me!
