Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, my husband has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I'm sure he will come on here himself at some point but he's not quite ready and still processing everything. He has to wait 3 weeks to go back to see the GP and diabetic nurse so right now we have no idea what he should be doing apart from exercising regulars and loosing some weight. Would be great to get some basic food advise, carb no carb etc. He feels very tired a lot at the moment. Thanks in advance

Welcome ! Good luck & pls ask away, there is lots of info from some lovely members 🙂

Welcome Phil40 and husband! It can feel a bit like you are left on a limb when you first get diagnosed and waiting for those appointments can be frustrating. There is lots of great info on this forum, the stickies at the top of the newbies section are great. You are right in considering the carbs, as it is the carbohydrate which effects (raises) our blood sugar. Your husband is probably feeling tired because his blood sugar is a bit high. I would start with a food diary writing down everything he eats normally and potentially seeing where you can make a few changes to bring down carb content. People on here will have loads of great ideas of lower carb alternatives, so fire away!
In terms of reading, the book recommended about the first year of diabetes (sorry, having trouble remembering) is fantastic. You might also like to consider getting a blood glucose testing meter so you can see which foods have the most effect on his blood sugars. Using this alongside a food diary can be very helpful. If your GP won't give you one, we recommend the codefree meter, as the strips you need to put in it to test your blood are the cheapest to buy (around £8 for 50, I believe).

Thanks, the food diary is a great idea, is so hard to know what to do for the next three weeks with no information and no idea what his levels are

Feel free to post what types of things he is eating on here, everyone is happy to make suggestions etc

Welcome, I'm a newbie myself, only diagnosed about 10 days ago, but I received so much support and initial information from the lovely people on this forum. After being initially very upset, confused and angry, I've now calmed myself and I'm determined that I will control the diabetes, and not the other way around. I'm sure your husband will also come to think this way in a few days. I'm on Metformin, and I've changed my diet radically, and stepped up my exercise levels, cycling on my exercise bike for 5 miles every morning and walking a lot. I don't want to pre-empt things but I have to say that today I feel better than I have done for the last couple of years. I have so much more energy, I wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, and it's only now that I realise how unwell I was for such a long time (not one for doctors I just kept putting off a visit until I couldn't ignore my symptoms any more). I don't weigh myself and wasn't radically overweight but I'm definitely noticing a difference already which can only be good. I wish your husband the very best and would encourage him to join the forum, it's been invaluable for me!

Hello and welcome aboard 🙂
