Type 2
Hello All,

Just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, unknown how long I have had diabetes, I had a kidney transplant in 2006, and ever since have been on steroids and a bunch of tablets daily which doesn't help with weight gain. A vicious circle of no appetite to having a more than healthy appetite. 3 Months ago I was 115kg, today was weighed 111.2kg, 6ft 2, so in the Obese catergory, so going in the right direction before being diagnosed. Just looking at diet plan for diabetes now, any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the group Steve....

One of the things you can do immediately which will have an impact to your Blood Glucose and weight is to cut or reduce main carbohydrate sources such as bread, pasta, rice, cereals & starchy vegetables such as potatoes.... Replacing them with green leafy vegetables instead.

Welcome! Slow and relatively steady was my motto! Took me getting on for two years to get to my 'fighting weight' (I've since put some of that back on, but am back in the groove losing what I gained in the same slow and steady way). My theory is that if my diet is not too different from when I'm no longer trying to lose weight, then it'll be easier to keep the weight off! Not sure that I've been too successful on that score, but on the positive side, I'm still off all medication and remain diet/exercise controlled after nearly 7 years since diagnosis. Also, even with the recent weight gain I am still way below what I was when I was diagnosed.

Diet-wise, I'm with what Martin Canty said. Also, I had the benefit of a blood glucose monitor (although I mostly self-funded the strips). I no longer monitor myself regularly though (not a problem yet, but if things 'go south', I might pick that up again to get me informed where I'm going wrong).
