Just diagnosed Type 2

Following this Type 2 diagnosis I went to the doctor a month ago now to talk through the results. He said my HbA1C was 52 the first time and 50 the second and I should eat less sugar. He recommended me for a course, and I have booked the Desmond course for next month. He said I didn't need to test with a finger prick. And he said I could continue to eat carbs. I didn't feel he was very helpful to be honest and he did say he didn't have much time. He spent the time he had telling me what I already knew from reading this site.

I have adjusted my diet and I am eating a low carb diet, it's ok, it's not so different from how I eat in the main. I would like to work out what works for me and understand it all better. So I have been finger prick testing for the last week or so I wander if there is more I can read about this? I have listened to the checking blood sugar levels audio and read the article.

I get results with the finger prink that are between 3.3 - 5.4. Is there somewhere I can get more information about what the results mean and how to interpret them and how they can help me to understand what food works for me. I quite often and have done for years felt sick and nauseous in the mornings and that's when the readings can be lower (under 4). I also went to Italy for the weekend and ate pasta (wheee) and ice cream and my blood sugars were 'normal' whilst there.... 5.2 - 5.4.

Perhaps I will find out more information at the Desmond course? I'm not sure what to expect. They have asked me to get a print out of my bloods results from the doctor to bring along.

Thank you in advance, I found this space reassuring and helpful, so am posting again. I didn't know the place to post this, so I just added it to my intro post. Please tell me if I put it in the wrong place. Hugest thanks for any info / thoughts.

Those reading are fantastic in fact probably a bit low. Starting spot testing levels with an HbA1C of 50 mmol/mol would often be much higher.
For somebody with Type 2 the levels to aim at are 4-7mmol/l fasting / morning and before meals and no more than 8-8.5mmol/l 2 hours post meal. If starting levels are higher than that then aiming for meals to result in no more than a 2-3mmol/l increase is what people use to determine if they are toleration meals and foods.
It looks as if you are well within those parameters.
The value of the monitor is it can both tell you what you can eat without a problem as well as what you aren't wise to eat.
It looks as things are going well for you.

Thank you so much that is so reassuring and very helpful. It's troubling when you don't know what things mean. Do I need to worry about levels below 4 and if so what do I do about it? Hugest thanks for your response, you set my mind at rest.

Somebody without diabetes would get those levels anyway.
If you have had higher levels for a while then your body needs to adapt to lower levels and some people can feel a bit wobbly if they are lower.
If taking medication (which you haven't said you are) that lowers blood glucose then anything below 4 might be an indication of being in hypo territory which if you drive would need treatment to bring you up a bit.
If you feel you need to then a biscuit should be enough.
