just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes medication starting in due course.

my average blood tests shows it has been above normal but every so often it then spikes highest been 19.

my overall health isn't good as i have bowel disease (diverticulitis) along with some other problems so will be glad just to start to improve things even if its just a little.

strange though as when i was in hospital before xmas a nurse was going to check my levels and at that time i wasn't a known diabetic so things were left yet unknown to me i was suffering with diabetes, oh well.

anyway i would like to say hello to all those on here and any support is more than welcome.

Hi and welcome 🙂

The good news is that you now know, that means you can take control back and get those pesky readings back in normal range! Not sure what you already know, carbohydrates are the problem for us, don’t bother looking for sugar content alone as it’s the full carb intake you need to keep in check as that’s what spikes your numbers. Potatoes, pasta, rice and bread are the big ones so the more you cut down or cut out the better. Burgen bread is one many of us use, Sainsbury’s also do a low carb option that’s is tasty but pricey. Be careful with fruit, especially tropical fruits as they are particularly high in natural sugar, some can tolerate a few berries where others like me can’t, so testing is key to working out what foods work for you. A rule of thumb for veg is if it grows below the ground avoid, above the ground (apart from peas) try it and test/ review.
You will find all you need to know on these pages so best advice would be to read as much as you can, then ask any questions you might have, everyone is really friendly and we have all been where you are now :D

Hello @mikeydt1 and welcome to a great forum. You can ask anything at all and there is nearly always someone who can advise you and we will definitely all support you. We all know what it is like to be diagnosed and a good majority of us have other health problems. Diabetes certainly seems to treat us all differently so what one can have another can’t so self-testing is a good idea when you are ready or want to do it. It’s a good indicator as to what foods your own body can tolerate and what you can’t. Look forward to seeing more of your posts x

many thanks for the replies.

i will be looking in to the monitor next week once i have seen the diabetic nurse as i need to have some bloods taken to see how the med is acting upon the liver as i have liver disease.

once i get a monitor i will know better what is causing my spikes i don't eat too many carbs unlike years ago so i really need to find out what is going on here and what the cause is.

going untreated for so long i hope that there hasn't been too much damage, i saw that keytones could be an indication of damage and i have had a few urine samples showing this, just feel a bit down for having this going untreated for so long

just got the medication today so here goes.

Ketones, if you are eating a low carb diet, are not a bad thing, and do not indicate damage. They show that you are using fat as fuel rather than glucose, which if you can't deal with carbs very well is no bad thing at all.

it was a high reading so they pulled me up about it mainly to see if i was eating okay trouble is that is years ago now then over time i started getting thirst along with very high urine outputs then a while ago i fell really ill and it was by off chance that they did the finger prick test and then after that blood test which confirmed type 2 diabetes.

with some of the symptoms i was getting i had an idea that it was diabetes but wasn't sure till the test results came back.

i need to tread carefully at this stage as i suffer with both bowel and liver disease so will see how things pan out, hopefully with the medication i should get some benefit.
