Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello - I was just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on Friday and have just left hospital. Think Im still in shock with the whole thing. Went to the doctors as I wasnt feeling to good and turns out I had a blood sugar level of over 27.8 (I think that is the highest their meter went to) and befor I knew it I was in hospital hooked up to various drips.
Im 33 but feel a bit stupid cause I didnt (until this weekend) know anything about the condition (noone in the family has it or friends) and am worried Im going to do something wrong now Im home.
In hospital I only met some older ladies who had type 2 diabetes but would like to be able to talk to people sort of my age who are living with it. Any advise would be great - ta

Hi Melissa and a warm welcome to the forum

Hi Melissa, welcome to the forum 🙂 I was in a similar position to you when I was diagnosed - didn't really know anything about diabetes. There is a lot to learn, but you have made a great start by joining here as there is a wealth of knowledge and experience amongst the members, so any questions or concerns you may have will be quickly answered 🙂

What insulin regime have you been put on? Have they mentioned any education courses to you? Have a look in our Useful links thread for some good sources of information to get you clued up. Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas is an invaluable reference guide to all things Type1 - don't be put off by the title, it is relevant to all ages!

As I said, please don't be afraid to ask anything you are unsure of - nothing is considered 'silly' and you may be asking questions that others would also like to know the answers to 🙂

Hi Melissa and welcome to here. Where in Scotland are you? I'm Scottish too and also new here, and also only 28! There's still a bit of a question over whether I am Type 2 or Type 1.5 and I too am still in shock really, it's only been a couple of weeks.

Welcome Melissaf

I was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in my 30s, which had serious consequences for my career. However, it hasn't meant the end of work, sports, travel etc.

Whatever your priorities / hopes / ambitions / interests, there are probably people on this board who can help / share experiences. Personally, I love outdoor activities, plus raising ducks and veggies, among other things.

Do you mind me asking, what was your career and why did it have serious consequences for it?

Welcome Melissa - you will find a wide range of people here. Hope you find the forum is helpful to you. PS - Its perfectly normal to feel shocked by your diagnosis - if you feel out of your depth with something or are worried, just ask and someone will be able to either answer you or push you in the right direction.

It must all seem like a lot to take in at the moment. It will get easier in time and everyone here has loads of experience and support to offer. x

Hi Melissa and welcome to the forums, although I'm sorry that your diagnosis brings you here. It's a good place to get support and make new friends though. It's normal to feel shocked when you first get diagnosed, as is grief, anger etc. It will take time to get to grips with it all but you will get there. XXXXX

Hi melissa.
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Where abouts are you from? I am in Edinburgh.
I was diagnosed with type 1 as an adult too, and like you, there is no family history at all.

I'm not too far from you then, rachelha. I'm in West Lothian. 🙂

Welcome melissa It must of been quite a shock and very upsetting. I was 31 when I ended up in a hospital miles away from my home, so not much difference in our ages when diagnosed. There is such a lot to take in and it can seem so bewildering. Try not to worry, things will get better for you, it will just take a little time to get used to. Take care and very best wishes Sheena

Welcome to the forum Melissa 🙂

Welcome Melissa! I'm like you and new to type 1 diabetes, I'm 29 and was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago... everyone I've spoken to on here has been really helpful and supportive and they keep telling me that no question is too stupid, so do ask!

I hope you find the answers you need here or just some people to talk to who are in a similar boat! I don't know much but always happy to talk as a fellow newbie if you need 🙂

Take care,

Hannah

Hi Melissa!

Pretty devastating news isn't it? - I was 22. Am 61 now and it's never stopped me doing anything I wanted to do. However to be fair I worked in an office unlike Copepod, who did want to go to Antarctica with her rather more exciting sounding job - she explained this on another thread quite recently. However - she found something else she liked doing instead. And times change anyway - now, the bars are lifting all the time.

You can be a firefighter, you can apply for a C1 driving licence - just two things off the top of my head that you were instantly utterly banned from doing when I was diagnosed. May not sound like much, but in X years time when you want to roam the world in your motorhome, the C1 licence might be very useful !

Anyway Melissa, this is a marathon, not a sprint so start educating yourself about diabetes and take baby steps - you'll get there quicker in the end. And ask any question you like. No such thing as a daft question on Diabetes forums!

Newby from Scotland Day 2

Thanks to everyone for making me feel so welcome yesterday.
My levels have been up and down all day down - as low as 8.8 this morning (2hrs after taking my injection) and as high as 25 a couple of hours ago (18.8 now). I hope this is normal to be so erratic at this early stage (I know its high but I feel ok). I went back to work just for a few hours this afternoon (given I only came out of hospital on Monday). Hmm will speak to the nurse tomorrow to find out if this is normal?!? The nurses are still telling me what insulin amount to take so all still out of my control at the moment.

Hi Melissa, it will take a little while for you insulin doses to be worked out so try not to worry 🙂 Have they mentioned any education courses to you?
