Just diagnosed 3 year old

Hello,
My daughter who turns 3 in September was diagnosed a week ago. We are in south of France for the summer holiday and I had taken her to the gp here when she started to be ill where they confirmed tonsillitis and gave antibiotics. When she got worse I took her back and was given different antibiotics. A day later I took her to AE where we were airlifted to a children's hospital in Nice. Her levels were 640 and she was almost in a coma.
It's now been a week and she has been fitted with an onnipod pump as well as a freestyle arm monitor. They said it's marketed for 4 years and above but many patients use it for younger children. She is doing ok but I'm struggling seeing her tired, pale and constantly hungry. I appreciate the support I have been getting here and luckily speak French but it's still not the same as being at home with a language you fully master..
My biggest worry is her getting colds and flus and how I will manage that so she doesn't get very ill..

Hi Oliviasmama, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your little one's diagnosis, it must have been a very worrying and distressing time for you It's interesting that she was given a pump straight away in France, she would probably have had to wait for it here in the UK. When do you return?

I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which is the best book available covering all aspects of living with Type 1 diabetes. People of any age can benefit from it. There is an excellent group of parents here in the UK who can be found at http://www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org/ - they also have a very active Facebook group for sharing information and experiences 🙂

You might like to get your LO a KIDSAC with Rufus the Bear from JDRF - JDRF are an excellent Type 1 charity with lots of information and support, and dedicated to finding a cure 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions. There is a very steep learning curve with Type 1, so whatever it is that might be worrying or confusing you, please let us know - there are lots of friendly, experienced and knowledgeable people here, parents and people who have grown up with diabetes, who will be happy to help. No question is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Hello Olivia - what a shock for you all and being away as well. I am on the Omnipod, so do ask if you have any questions about it. How are you getting on with it? It is very early days as yet and she will settle in to it and begin to feel much better.
