Being non-D myself, I am just wondering at what number HIGH level do you start feeling unwell, how does it manifest itself, etc? Only curious as my son is still not testing and is only using occasional Novorapid, so wonder how he is really feeling in himself. A few weeks ago he was waking in the 10's and I don't think things have changed much.

High BGs seem to me more readily felt by some than others. Some people feel awful at 10.1 while others can potter along in the teens and not feel much difference, BG tests coming as a bit of a surprise.

Typically high BGs are linked with tiredness, lethargy and thirst. High BGs can also give confusingly hypo-like symptoms of hunger, weakness, paranoia and a general feeling of being ill at ease.

It's a hard one as it depends on several factors..

If your levels have creep up slowly then it's likely that your body will adjust to the raise and no real noticable effect is felt until it starts getting quite high.. If it's a sudden jump then you will probably feel rough quicker.

At what point you start getting ketones and showing signs of DKA the body actually starting to struggle will be dependant on indivivdual thresh holds.. You are told to check for ketones if your BG goes above 12mmol/l but you may not develope any until you hit th 20's but here again you might find them at 12mmol/l

But if you don't know what he's his level is running at, if he's high then it probably loose some weight, so keep an eye on this side of things

You really need to find someone who can talk to him and get into his mindset to persuade him that he needs to accept his responsibilities to himself.

Have you spoken to his dsn about it ?

Hi Tina,

I would say you're son is finding his diagnosis difficult and could even be in denial/depressed, hence not doing what he needs to do. In my line of work I know a teenager who will only inject once a day (she won't inject herself, her mother does for her) instead of twice and refuses to accept she has diabetes. Its a difficult situation to be in; plus the fact teenagers are under so much peer pressure to be "normal" teenagers. My teenage son doesn't have diabetes but asking him to do somehting is normally met by shouting and slamming doors....

He needs some-one to talk to (a friend; school teacher; even his DN) to express how he feels and only then can small steps be taken...

You should broach the subject with his DN to ask for professional advice - good luck and keep strong. Big hug. Amanda x 🙂

For me when I go high I tend to feel very stiff in my limbs and just unwell but it does depend on how my control is etc. Younger people are different and I can quite easily remember being 20 (BTW I'm now 32) at uni and testing one of the few times that year and being at 29mmol and feeling fine but now rreadings in the mid teens and I wanna go to bed.

The only real hyper I can remember pre when I got myself straight was again at 20 when I was on a months trip to Brazil and came back from working at this ophanage we were working at and the lady we were staying with made this drink for us. Being thirsty I had several large glasses the saw her making a new batch adding loads of sugar 😱 BTW this was back in the days of human mixtard two injections a day.

Oh eek LOL

I had a mega high just the other morning. Knew my pump reservoir was running low, and it kept beeping and vibrating alongside me in bed and i just kept shutting it up until I realised it was constant (it normally only beeps when it has 20u left - well that's tomorrow isn't it?, plenty of time ...

Anyway it was about 06.00 and dark so I turned the bedside light on and found me glasses, it said 'Occlusion' (ie blockage). Occlusion my foot, it was completely empty!

It was only then I had a mental picture of the remote being mid-bolus delivery sometime previously, when it had told me it only had 20u left, I just shut it up so I could make sure it had finished the bolus.

And promptly forgot about it .......

Ooops.

Anyway 20 something - thundering headache, nausea, dizzy. And of course, the thirst .....

Unlikely to be as bad so quick on basal/bolus, as there's usually some basal kicking about to prevent the worst symptoms. With me would take two or three days constantly in the high teens before I felt like that (was when I had my nervous breakdown and couldn't control my BG) But forget to take your bolus and you know about it!

If it shoots up very suddenly, I get a 'hot flush' very similar to the sort I had You Can Guess When LOL, was bit tricky when I was having the normal sort of mid-life ones, used a lot of unnecessary test strips!
