Anybody else? I did notice novarapidboi on the dafne forum and shelley on the facebook group, but wondered who else has done it.

More importantly are you still using what you learned and did it help?

I aim to carry it on but in the real world it I may find it hard at times.

I did the DAFNE several years back not a member of the forum as I haven't got our clinic code due to no forum when I did it🙄

Even though I was carb counting before going on DAFNE I did find going through the results and guidence on interpretating results very useful indeed...

And yes I still use a lot of the DAFNE principles we were taught, and just adapted parts to better suit myself...

Some years now since I did the dafne course but thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a great deal, didn't really think that they could tell me much after 20 odd years but boy was I wrong.

Still using the dafne principles now and can see no other way, a few months of calculating and weighing food and it will all become second nature so fear not.

I thought same as you Toby, cos I was taught to carb count when Adam was a lad and I was diagnosed.

What I could never get right though was the Dose Adjustment bit once I was actually on MDI. Or corrections. Nor did I know how to test my basal ! and if you don't do that properly and get that right, the rest of it won't be right either. I used to stab at it (LOL) but it was very hit and miss.

Every day of my life I use it.

But mine wasn't DAFNE, was a take on BERTIE.

Nobody done it recently then I take it lol

I've allready got stuck, last night I ordered a knickerbocker glory at the local hungry horse had a stab at 5 cp's and woke up high. It was nice though:D

I did a local version of the course but there were issues. Advice seemed to be based on the 1 unit of insulin cover 10g of carbs rule. So they said if you had a snack of less than 10g don't cover it but if its more cover it with insulin.

I did query as to whether you should be looking at what your ratio was for that time of day and using that to decided whether you needed to inject for a snack or not.

I have had problems when needing help - as it seems that whenever I can't work out what is happening no one else can.

You could try and put your results on here, we may come up with some ideas between us. I did find that on the course, when one individual was struggling the group chipped in and sorted it.

If your 'hungry horse' meal was a bit bigger than usual Ypauly, bear in mind that your ratio(s) may well fail at a certain carb load and you might need extra on top of your usual calculation (one third more works for me). Some suggest half your weight in Lbs as grams of carbs (so if 160lb 80g carbs would be the turning point) others simply go by the rule of thumb that 7u should be a max individual bolus.

Glad Dafne is going well. Keep us posted.

It's got to be remembered that any DAFNE or similar course isn't the IkEA flat pack instruction manual.. You've got really use the theory at your guideline..

The main reason for the if snack is under 10g's don't need to inject is because a lot of people can graze snack over a couple of hours, but if they which could lead to stacking of the insulin

Ypauly, another reason for your high in the morning, which is one you can to have to monitor to see how it pans out, hungry horse if I remember rightly is largely based around chip or roast type meals, which meals a lot slower asorbtion rate and knickerboker's are also high fat content.. So if you are rather insulin resistent in the mornings, the lag time can have a greater impact..

Sometimes on large meals with high fat content, it's better to split the insulin some before the meal the rest after this give you a much longer spread of acting insulin and can curtail the morning rise... The only problem adding on extra insulin ratio to a large meal, is that it could cause you to go hypo before your BG raises...

Another factor is your starting BG not just for the correction amount, but if you are starting with an higher BG, then the spike can increase by a large portion causing as higher BG's can be more insulin resistent to your BG raises more than if you would have the same meal at a lower starting BG...

One of the tricks to good control is remember all the different senrio's which effect that one injection/carb ratio.. If you can do this then it does get a lot easier with the control side...

Thanks for adding that about splitting larger doses Ellie. Forgot to mention that!

My problem was the the person leading the course taught certain aspects as if it was a 'flat pack instruction manual'. They never spoke at all about stacking insulin - it was a one snack at a time rule. In terms of 10g - they said it wouldn't matter if you had less than 10g as it would have been covered by the previous injection, but more than 10g and it would. Depending on your ratios that could be bad advice.

I hope you get your pump. I am on the site as NoNeed though I havn't posted yet.

I completed the Dafne in May and it was a great experience. I think being newly diagnosed helped as I wasnt stuck in comfortable shoes if you get what I mean. I still use the dafne principles and the course has really changed the way I think of food, less of a burden and more enjoyment!!

Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
