You mean God's Worst Railway lol.
The LNWR was the largest joint stock company in the world and the largest pre group company to form the LMS in 1923. Coventry was built by the London and Birmingham Railway which was a constituent of the LNWR in 1846.

I live just out side Coventry but to the north. Bed'uth….Bedworth....Bedrock!

OMG - we live in Bedrock too! I always knew it was a small world - but ….. :D

Pete was born and bred here - but I'm from West Brom - so have always found they understand me here whereas in Coventry I was always having to repeat myself. Mining villages, see? 🙂

I live just off Marston Lane. As you say "it's a small world".
I was born in Coventry but moved about a bit courtesy of the MOD. I know West Brom. I drive a truck for DPD out of Hinckley and they have a couple of hubs in the Smethwick/Oldbury area.
Mines….there used to be around 12 of them at one time within a 7 mile radius!

Welcome Steamshed. Just wanted to let you know that you have been miss informed about the meaning of GWR, it does in fact stand for Gods Wonderful Railway, as an ex GWR fireman I thought I would help you out with the correct meaning 🙄😉:D:D

John.

John,
Thanks for the welcome.
Are you sure it's not the Great Way Round?
Have you ever considered putting pen to paper and writing about your experience on the footplate. I really find that of interest as i'm sure many others might do.

I think there is a generation which lost the railways - I am almost 70 and grew up in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and remember country walks where, if you came to a crossing when a coal train was approaching you would wave to the men in the cab, and then sit down as the huge long line of coal trucks went by slowly, sedately, as the newly loaded coal slowly settled down under the gentle shaking from the unwelded rails - that was when trains moved to a constant 'diddle de da'.

@ukjohn - I already told him that on page 1 but he consistently gets it wrong. (I have a nasty suspicion the Gentleman doth protest too much)

We're on completely the other side of the metropolis to you @Steamshed, virtually in Exhall.

It’s known as Great Western Failway here on the Cotswold line (and autocorrect didn’t even try to change that!) They do publish an outstanding work of fiction twice a year, though...their timetable!
