Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all 🙂

Only just registered so getting use to how it works on here lol

Only recently last week was i diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes....

Which health wise in general plus that really made me go into bits and couldn't get me head round it, it is still fresh but can't run away from it... but there are ways to improve it of course.

I am 31 years old and i am morbidly obese as well which also doesn't surprise me with recently being diagnosed i do know of course no matter big or small you can get it my biggest down falls were chocolate and pasta chocolate was the worst one for me cause i always felt like i needed it i never liked sugar coated stuff but chocolate was my best friend.

I got diagnosed 4 days ago i haven't started my tablets yet as i still have blood tests tomorrow to make sure my heart and everything is ok before they put me on them but eating wise the past few days have been going really well.

I hope is what I'm looking for on here is support/ new friendship and maybe any helpful tips on anything that i would need to know or might help make things better ect be much appreciated.

I hope you are all doing well and keeping strong especially with the whole pandemic situation as i know it can be hard for people during this difficult time but as long as we can support one another and keep strong and get out for some fresh air and have a nice walk to clear the head and do what it is we got to do I'm sure we will be fine.

all the best!

Amy x

Hello @amy_stancill

So good that you have joined the forum, and I hope that you will find plenty of help and friendship here.

I can still remember that big shock of first diagnosis, it really knocked me off my feet.
Diabetes is a serious condition, but you can do a lot to help yourself and there is a help and support available.

We are all different though, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ and you need to find what right for you.
For me, a new way of eating, and increased exercise, plus some medication has worked.
As well as cutting out all the sugary things, I cut down on the carbs particularly the ‘white’ ones (white bread and flour, rice, pasta, etc ) and mainly eat fish, poultry, yoghurt, some cheeses, nuts and seeds, and have learned to love vegetables .

There is a lot of information available, and it is worth taking your time to think what will work best for you and make some changes gradually.

Good places to start reading is the Learning Zone tab at the top of this page.

Hi, just wanted to welcome you to the forum 🙂 xx

Hi and welcome from a recovering chocoholic!
I have been a Cadbury's girl all my life and really had no "off switch" when it came to eating chocolate. Now I eat a square of 70+% dark chocolate with a teaspoon of peanut butter most days and that is enough to give me a chocolate hit without wanting to eat the whole bar. I had to stop completely and go cold turkey for a few months first though. This reset my taste buds to find sweetness in things that I would previously not have enjoyed. I do find the 85% or higher bitter but the peanut butter mellows it and you do acquire a taste for it after a while but it is not addictive like the sugar in milk chocolate, so one square is enough and much lower carb than milk chocolate.

Welcome to the forum Amy from a fellow T2.

Hi @amy_stancill from another T2 🙂 Starting out is hard, there seem to be so many things to get to grips with. I had a lot of weight to lose (and I'm still not there yet!) but I just thought about one day at a time as I couldn't cope with thinking down the weeks and months ahead. I found that as I cut out the carbs I wanted them less and less and I'm much less hungry than I used to be. I can't say anything about reducing the chocolate because I never really ate that much but @rebrascora's advice sounds brilliant.

Best of luck and fire away with any questions you have...it's a very knowledgable forum although I'm still learning! x

Welcome to the forum @amy_stancill

Glad you have found us!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but we are a friendly bunch and will be with you every step of the way.

Try not to be disheartened about your diagnosis, many people on the forum later reflect that their diagnosis became a sort of trigger which prompted them to make lots of small positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Many say they end up feeling ‘healthier’ and more energised then they have for years.

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy. 🙂

Members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book, as very helpful starting points.

For a bit more background information, the ‘useful links’ thread is a mine of helpful information - useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes

Good luck and keep us posted 🙂

Welcome @amy_stancill from another T2 here. Only diagnosed at the start of the year and it’s been a rollercoaster that’s for sure.
Honestly don’t know what I’d have done without this forum and the advice and support from those who use it.

Remember there really isn’t anything like a silly question so ask anything. Actually scratch that and ask everything!

Hi Amy 🙂

Welcome to the forum, I am a fairly new type 2 diabetic and I am also on tablets now after briefly taking insulin. I've found the forum so encouraging and I wish you the best of luck on your journey 🙂
