Hi all,
I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 49!
To be honest this has been difficult to take and I'm struggling to make changes.
I have cut sugar from my teas and coffees but I'm trying to look at meal times so any help would be great?
Exercise has been an issue for me as I use to play a lot of sport but have trouble with arthritis in both big toes and it hurts to sometimes walk let alone run!
For those that say try swimming, this is something again that don't want to do, never enjoyed swimming!

Hi Pipey, welcome to the group, sorry to hear abut the DX but you are in good company.

As for exercise, sounds like cycling may be an option as it's low impact (on the toes)

Now, down to food..... carbs are our problem, not just sugar..... Try to cut or reduce things like bread, pasta, rice, cereals & starchy vegetables such as potatoes replacing them with leafy green(ish) vegetables. Food affects each one of us differently so it's quite important to test to see how different foods affect your BG. On this forum many of us advocate self-testing, assuming that you were not issued a test meter, many of the group self-fund & purchase the SD Codefree from Amazon.
 
Welcome Pipey . You will find lots of great and useful information on this forum. Everyone shares their knowledge and experience and is very friendly. Carbohydrates are the big thing with this beast so you will find that bread, pasta, rice, as well as the obvious simple sugars from cakes, biscuits and the like, need to be cut out or severely limited. Test, test and test to get to know your own body and what it can tolerate. Most of it is trial and error to find out what works for you so you will no doubt have highs and lows (literally ) during this process. My 10p worth is to make good notes for yourself on any reaction from certain foods, what spikes your levels, what lowers them, and of course your test readings each time. I find this really useful as I can see at a glance what spikes me and can work (and eat) around it. Good luck. Hope to see you here again

I too still have my 'L' plates at this game and have found it an emotional and mental struggle ... and still do!
The advice above is good, though I have just taken to heart the overall advice of eat healthily (I.e cut out c**p - but still eating carbs much more sensibly), exercise more .... and these will help you lose weight ( if you need to).
Ref exercise. In the past I was VERY fit, but in recent years have let that go!!!! - bit bloody late now but hey ho! I had concerns on returning to exercise and for a number of years had suffered a lot of knee pain. The other week I tried to lift a weight of 30kg which is just less than the weight I've now lost ..... and could barely lift it - so no wonder my poor old knees were screaming carrying that ALL the time!!!! I'm now pain free and run 5k usually a couple of times a week. One form of activity I've re-discovered .... and now loving it is Cycling; swimming didn't float my boat either (pun intended). On first going out with the wife (that's the other positive - you can do it together) we managed about 3 miles!!! Now often on a Sunday we cycle 16 miles (round trip) to a local stately home and enjoy a lovely cup of tea and a home made shortbread!!!!! (Cos I can🙂). We don't pedal like Bradley Wiggins, just a nice steady pace, and a 2 hour ride (1 there 1 back) burns around 7-800 calories! .... so a bonus!!!
I have probably gone OTT on the exercise, but in many ways enjoying returning to my 'old form' .... the only positive thing I see in this, and sooooo wishing I'd done it before now! :(
Good luck in your journey - all I will say is listen to the advice from all angles, then do what is right for YOU!

Oh by the way ..... Several months ago I would have looked a silly bugger in cycling gear (probably like a big beached Sea Lion etc) ... I'm now a Lycra fiend, with padded shorts and slick cycling glasses (and of course helmet) .... I probably still look a silly bugger - but I don't care now!

Welcome! You have to make changes that can be maintained by yourself long term as it is a marathon not a sprint! If exercise is a problem how about trying hand weights or exercise bands. My take is some exercise is better than none! I do things like walk around while waiting for the kettle to boil and brushing my teeth! They also class housework as activity too!
 
Hi Pipey and welcome. 🙂 Once you get your head round the diagnosis you will see there's lots you can do to improve things. Try to lower carbs generally not just sugar and incorporate as much exercise as you can into your day. Even a short walk helps to lower your BG. It doesn't have to be more. There are meal ideas in the food section here to give you ideas. And if you can test your levels it will give you an idea of how different foods affect you and you can see progress too.

Age 73 .
Diagnosed earlier this year, on one 500 gram Metformin a day, and am trying to lose weight.
Lost 6 kgs so far, another 10 and I will be happy.

A1c level 11/02/16 48mmol ---- 16/09/16 44mmol and lost one stone.
Plus another 4lbs now.
Trouble is my vision gets slightly blurred some times ,not for long ,I think this is high blood glucose, normally after a meal ,but goes if I walk along the lane for 30 mins.
How am I doing?
 
Welcome to the forum, Ratty29. Congratulations on weight loss so far. You're on the right tracks with your explanation oeffects of high blood glucose on eyesight and effects of walking (or other exercise) to reduce high blood glucose. Only other thing to consider is reducing carbohydrate content of meals.
