Broadcaster and comedian Jim Bowen, best known for hosting darts-based game show Bullseye in the 1980s and '90s, has died at the age of 80.

His wife Phyllis confirmed the news to BBC Radio Lancashire.

The former deputy headmaster, who lived in North Lancashire, began his career as a stand-up comedian on the club circuit in the 1960s.

He became a household name when he began presenting Bullseye in 1981. The Sunday tea time show ran for 14 years.

It attracted 17.5 million viewers at its peak and involved three pairs of contestants - with a "thrower", who would throw the darts, and a "knower", who would answer general knowledge questions.

Unmissable programme, RIP Jim, thanks for all the laughs 🙂

Jim did a great stand up routine, seen him in the early 80's and he was very funny, a nice genuine man who never forgot his roots. Sad week with the loss of Ken Dodd and Prof Hawking today.

I remember him being a comic. And Bullseye.

I loved it when he took the mickey out of the prizes on Bullseye. The couple of lads who won a speedboat between them and lived in the middle of land locked areas! ‘Look what you could have won...a fitted kitchen between the two of you!’ Sad week for the old greats :(

You took the words right out of my mouth, @Amigo. I've watch repeats on Challenge recently, & some of the prizes are just weird by today's standards. Cut glass decanter sets were just so 80's.

RIP Jim another Golden Oldie passes on. To many recently

It is. I saw Ken Dodd several times and he was so funny but shows went on over 5 hours. A sad week indeed
