It's for those who are in danger of getting hypos and this isn't the case for everyone.

If, for example, you inject insulin, the amount has to be estimated and depends on what you eat, how much you eat of it and how much physical activity you do. There is the potential to get this wrong, have too much insulin with the result that the blood glucose levels then go too low. The jelly babies bring the level back up. It's bad enough having to watch things at the upper end of the scale without the additional worry of watching the lower end as well.

It is just not jelly babies rosie, everyone has a preferred sugar hit in case of a hypo, I have lucozade to hand plus jelly babies, when you inject insulin anything that has a lot of sugar in it is like medicine as it will generally bring your blood glucose levels back up 🙂

I prefer fruit pastels 🙂, its not only people on insulin it applies to others on certain types of meds for example gliclazide, I do have a carton of fruit juice by the bed as well.

And to dispel any erroneous ideas - there is nothing that diabetics cannot eat that non-diabetics can. You can eat sugar but it isn't good for you, but if you are on insulin you can probably adjust for it.

Any of the jelly type sweets will help with a hypo, just look for glucose syrup as a main ingredient. The faster it will dissolve the better it will be.

Sorry should have said that oral meds can also cause hypos needing sugar to 😱

I choose the jelly babies as a rule because I get a bit blood thirsty when I'm hypo and I, umm [whisper]like to bite their heads off.[/whisper] 😱

I think I will stick to jelly babies as fruit pastels are not like they used to be in the old days 🙂

Alison!!! 😱......lol....never would want to annoy you!!😉

Everyone has different ways of dealing with hypos. I buy a bag of fruit jellies to last me a week as I find it hard to have a meal without something sweet and I don't always want a pice of fruit or a big dessert, one or two fruit jellies is justthe thing

It took me 41 years of diabetes to discover jelly babies as a hypo treatment and they are now my favourite way of dealing with a low sugar - but Mark is mean if he passes them to me he gives me green and yellow ones because they're for "medicinal purposes" little does he know that when he isn't around I take the black and red ones:D

9 out of 10 people do Alison. It's what big cats do, go for the throat.

I prefer nibbling the limbs off before delivering the coup de gr?ce. I've obviously watched to many films about the middle ages.

thank for all replys ,l understand now, but lm t 2, alison your so funny l think the black ones are juicy:D

I just love jelly babies. If I have some at home I get a wee tea plate and a sharp knife. Then I operate on them. I cut all of their heads off and all of their legs off and swap heads, legs and bodies and have multicoloured jelly babies. My daughter said I'm strange.......moi???? :D

Heavens! And I thought I was mean to the poor things! :D:D

You lot don't know 'mean'.

I know someone, diagnosed when she was 3, who was very surprised I'd never injected insulin into a jelly baby until it exploded !

Never done it - it had never even occurred to me! but then I wasn't diagnosed till I was 22 and already, quite obviously. old and boring !
