Wow, i thought this would be easy now Ive got my half dose pen.

Not to sure how to work my ratio sums (new was good at that sort of thing)

Example 35 grams of carbs for lunch - ive been working on a ratio of 1:15 prior to the half dose pen. Now DB nurse says that she rekons thats too much so, so would have gone 2 units, and 1:20 is more like so today i did 1.5 units. Can someone help me with what that ratio is now please. sorry but my head just stops at this calculation :(

1.5 units for 35g carbs is a ratio of 1:23

If you get a calculator and divide the number of carbs by the number of units of insulin you'll get 1:x where x is the number on your calculator after you divide.

If you had 35g carb and you wanted a ratio of 1:20 then you would need 1.75 units (35 divided by 20) which you can do.
But if you used 1.5 units for 35g carb then the ratio is 1:23.333333 (35 divided by 1.5).
So if you can only have whole or half units the amount of carbs has to be able to be divided by 20 and give 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 etc.
Eg 40g carb would need 2 units, 50g carb would need 2.5 units.

oh blimey, @pm133 another awkward one lol - my breakfast one is just as daft! lol

@gillrogers maybe the easier way to think about it is half a unit of insulin for every 10g of carbs that you eat.
If you eat 35g carbs, you will need to decide whether to round up to 2 units or round down to 1.5 units.
If this is breakfast which you eat every day, it should be easy to do a bit of trial and error. I think I would start with the more conservative option (1.5 units) first to avoid a hypo if it is too high.

Oh yes that's a better way to do it. Thanks @helli

I think that’s a helpful rule of thumb. But I do find eating fairly consistent meals is really helpful too. Especially breakfast and lunch, which I think of as more functional meals, I tend to eat the same things almost all the time. Then if the tried and trusted dose/timing combos stop working, I can be reasonably sure it’s because my diabetes has shifted the goalposts again, and my insulin needs have changed (as they can do with the seasons)

Yes I eat like that too. So I'm getting there. Oh mine change d dramatically after about 6 months of starting on 2 insulins. Helped by the fact I'm sure that my stress levels had dropped considerably and then the covid jabs and now this heat.

It's started getting cooler again here already .... though I haven't needed a cardigan on, yet ...
