Hello, I’m new to the forum and still in the process of digesting copious volumes of information on type 2 diabetes from various sources. I’ve gained greatly from the information and ideas on this site, thanks for being here.
I’m newly diagnosed with type 2, steroid induced, I’m less than a stone overweight.
I’m currently managing on diet and excercise quite well. I’d like to know which blood glucose monitor to buy and where please.

Hi jasmine8, welcome to the forum 🙂 If you have to buy your own meter the cost of the test strips is the main consideration, as many High St brands can charge up to £30 for 50 strips 😱 The cheapest option we have come across is the SD Codefree Meter which has test strips at around £8 for 50 - many of our members use this meter 🙂 You might also like to read Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S which is a guide to testing efficiently and effectively 🙂

In addition to all your current reading I would recommend reading Maggie Davey's letter and getting a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker 🙂

Hi Jasmine, I am type two but on insulin. I have an accu chek nano on prescription but also bought the Sd code free blood monitor as a spare. I find this machine extremely reliable and test strips are cheap.

Brilliant! Thank you so much for the warm welcome, speedy reply, information on the meters and references to further reading, much appreciated. Those test strips are expensive, I can what you mean. However, a worthy investment to compliment everything else that I can do to learn about my own blood glycose levels and take back some control. ‍♂️ Thanks again, I will no doubt return with more questions.

Thanks for the warm welcome WL, I’m already feeling the support, thank you. I have just increased my exercise plan, so let’s hope together with the changes to my diet, it keeps me off meds for as long as possible. ‍♀️‍♀️

SD CodeFree works well for me, wouldn't be without it - and don't get me started on my opinion of the NHS refusal to supply meters to T2s: grrrrrr! Loads of good stuff here, whether you have specific queries or just have one of those days when only a rant will do. Loads for you (and me) to learn but I can say with certainty that if you use the forum, life will get easier.

I think it’s dreadful patients aren’t prescribed blood glucose monitoring equipment considering this disease requires regular assessment and self- care. Thanks for your endorsement of the SD CodeFree, I have looked it up and feel quite positive about it. I shall no doubt return with questions and a release of emotions, it’s good to read this is a safe and supportive place. Thanks for sharing.
