Programme on C4 tonight at 9pm, watch out for references about how it's all down to sugar that we've all got diabetes...🙄

Not the huge dollops of pasta or pizza that's he's mad keen on making then? 😉

Oh that's a relief! 🙄

Didn't know that he was medically qualified, or a diabetic specialist - you live and learn.

I used to like him when he first appeared on TV, but since then he is so up his own backside that I wonder how he can reach out and switch the oven on!

I must confess to feeling some sympathy (and frustration) when he attempted to revolutionise school meals in the US and was caught up in a battle with the authorities in the 'diabetes capital' of America, Huntington in WV. Most of the kids couldn't recognise vegetables in their natural form and the school board insisted that breakfast pizza was healthy for the kids because it contained tomatoes! 😱

He actually shed tears and frankly he had a point. I have a close friend from there and even she admits that the diet is carb laden. Every third person she knows seems to have diabetes!

But unfortunately he has become rather irritating since his early days when he seemed unspoilt and endearing.

Got to laugh...as I was typing that, an email popped up offering me a 'very attractive funeral plan!'. Really cheered me up! You wonder who gives them the addresses.

I think his heart's in the right place. I dare say he likes the attention, but I don't think that is his primary motivation.

Some of the stuff he had to deal with in the US was horrifying 😱 When I was at school I really enjoyed the school dinners - vegetables, meat and enough stodge to satisfy a growing boy's appetite, hardly anything processed and all cooked on the school premises. When I saw what had become of things (not having kids myself) I was truly shocked at what was on offer! 😱

All this business about institutionalised food offerings really ought to have brought proper changes - James Martin had similar experiences with hospital food, yet little has really changed :(

Interesting, Coke & certain countries & the no of T2. A soda Tax ?

Interesting to see how a hugh effort was made to distinguish between diabetes types when the subject first came up. Looks like Mr Oliver learned a lesson after the 'diabetes' soft drink photo shoot debacle earlier in the year.

The figures from Mexico were horrifying - interesting what Alexandro(?) was saying about how deeply ingrained in the culture the consumption of sugary drinks has become.

I think a lot of the battle here will be about cultural change - all that stuff about supermarket checkouts. Replacing one snack (chocolate bar) with another allegedly 'healthy' one. Surely part of the problem is that snacking is now seen as a more or less continual part of life. Every moment is another opportunity to consume and the high street/food industry is all too happy to oblige!

I was amused how the programme led to the usual poorly informed speculation on Twitter, with one smoothie drink company deciding to take the opportunity to extol how their products were low sugar and had no added sugar, unlike evil Coca-Cola.

Then I pointed out that their smoothies had 9-10g of sugar per 100ml in them, which yes, was lower than Coke's 10.6g...but that's not exactly much lower is it? Cue the usual speculation about how 'natural' sugar is apparently completely different from 'added' sugar....

As I have said before if JO is that against it then don't buy it and don't stock it in his restaurants thus it's not putting money in the soft drink companies pocket.

Would there be a medical exemption to a sugar tax for those who rely on sugary products to potentially keep them alive?

He is planning a unilateral 'sugar tax' in his restaurants, with money raised going to support something or other. He was encouraging other restaurants/chains (eg Costa) to do the same - had them all around a table saying "We (restaurateurs) are in a unique position to do something about this, even if the government won't." Some seemed quite keen.

Sugar causes T2 diabetes? scientific fact is it, I didn't think anyone knows what caused it (if there is an it and not a multiplicity of its).

Restaurants and food outlets are there to provide the public with what they want. They should not be telling people that they can't have high sugar products or anything else that is deemed bad for you. Are we all children?

Does a tax on tobacco stop people smoking? where will it all end if the Government taxes things it doesn't want us to have.

Oh God I can't STAND Jamie Oliver ha ha I never watch anything of his. I hate his attitude towards most things although I do agree he does have the best intentions mostly. This "sugar tax" thing in his restaurant sounds interesting...

His "15 minute meals" really are the worst for me. I have barely any time to cook properly at the moment and his "15" minute for a chef = an hour of faffing around for someone who doesn't enjoy cooking much!

Maybe I'm just bitter ha ha

I don't mind Jamie, and I think showing good healthy food is no bad thing, but the whole sugar tax business is just ridiculous. We're raising a generation to believe they have no power over their basic wants and desires. It's ruddy tragic. They need to teach youngsters that life is all about compromise. I'd like to drink champagne and scoff chocolates all day, but I have to look at the consequences and weigh the pros and cons. I'd also like to be an international jewel thief (sounds exciting, and there will be sparkles) but I have little desire to experience prison life therefore that ship must gently sail by. There's something much deeper seated beneath all this that some of us learn, you can't have everything you want. Encourage this generation of kids to learn the value of making choices and bin the quick tax and gastric band culture.

What really worries me is the very people and organisations who are supposed to have our welfare as their prime goal are the ones promoting this "fault" nonsense. All that does is play to the natural human desire to believe everything can be controlled. Medics incidentally have that trait in spades, if they didn't believe they could control the rotation of the earth they'd collapse in a heap doing their job. We've seen what that's done to medical care for type 2, transformed it into a "be quiet and stop stuffing your pie hole" mentality, meanwhile people are dropping dead or having limbs amputated because they are not being given the basic tools to manage their condition. That's OK though because they brought it on themselves, and the charities can continue to pat themselves on the back for doing a sterling job at raising awareness, rather than spending their money on making sure people have the tools they need to keep themselves safe. Sorry I'm ranting, but it makes me so angry 😡

I share your anger kooky!

Sick of seeing Type 2's depicted on TV by waddling fat backsides struggling to get off park benches clutching a huge pasty in their mitts! I'm sure they have a stock picture of these posteriors because I recognise the pull up pants! 😡

Maybe they'll start issuing badges to differentiate between type 1's and 2's just to hammer home the erroneous message...'can't help it', 'won't help it!'. Then the public can throw cream buns at us in disgust for over-stretching their health budgets! :(
