I've been approached by a tv company making a documentary with Jamie Oliver on the topic of sugar - here's the blurb:

We are currently producing a one-off documentary for Channel 4, in which Jamie Oliver will examine current levels of sugar consumption and investigate its potentially harmful effects on health. 'Jamie's Sugar Rush' (working title) picks up the campaigning narrative where 'Jamie's School Dinners' left off ten years ago and asks what needs to be done to tackle sugar's contribution to our burgeoning health problems. Can a tax on high sugar products help?

Jamie will be pushing for the introduction of a tax on sugary drinks and will be introducing a self imposed tax in his restaurants, with all proceeds going to charity.

As part of the programme we'd like to discuss how excessive consumption, including the excessive consumption of sugar, can contribute to obesity; and in turn the impact the rise in obesity is having on the rates of type 2 diabetes.

Given Jamie's background he is particularly interested in finding out more about type 2 diabetes in children, and we'd like to film Jamie meeting a young person with the condition. I understand this is very rare, but I wonder if you might be able to help or offer advice, it would be great to touch base to discuss (PM me for phone number, or use the 'Contact' link at the top of the screen)

We are looking to film this on 13th July and the programme is due to be broadcast on 31st of August.

This will be a high profile documentary that will highlight important issues and ultimately push for positive changes. Please rest assured that all filming would be done in a sensitive manner with a very small crew and we appreciate that any filming would be dependent on permission from individuals and their parents.

I'm not aware of any Type 2 children on the forum, and I don't think we've ever had one as a member, but perhaps someone reading this might be able to help.

I will be very interested to watch the programme, I do think he has genuinely had an effect on food in schools, even if there is still some resistance. No-one likes being told what to eat, and we have so much choice these days. And 'treats' seem to be under the radar, they don't count when thinking of whether it's a good diet.

I do so hope they will emphasie EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION, not just sugar itself, which is all people hear.

Sorry if this has distracted the point of your posting

Apparently - cos Patti has spoken to Sian, the contact person - he's concentrating on kids and fizzy drinks. Patti talked to her about it 'not being about that - or even about sugar itself!' whether it's obesity generally or anything diabetes related. It is all about cabs generally.

Sian has expressed some interest about a general carbs prog - so we'll see. Apparently she approached 'Children with Diabetes' first off and was sent packing - it's ONLY for T1s apparently.

So - seems T2 kids and their parents have NO support - except from the NHS.

Ok I will bite, if he feels that strongly why is he selling the stuff in his restaurant in the first place? 🙄

Agreed. My thoughts also is why should people be paying a tax - why not force the food companies to change their recipes?

I really can't stand Jamie Oliver, ever since he started talking about sugar and taxing it. If they add tax to my hypo treatments I will be mad. I imagine this programme will be infuriating.

My thoughts exactly Katie. Will we be exempt from paying tax on medical grounds

Also, other side of the coin, my mum is actually allergic to aspertime and other artificial sweeteners. So if she does ever want to have a fizzy drink, she has to have normal coke. So basically she will be paying more because of her allergy.

Mind you, I pay a hell of a lot more for my gluten free bread, so I won't show much sympathy 😉

We have a few MODYs but I think they're all young adults. Sounds to ms like an ill considered hobby horse of a series and I'd be very careful about any involvement.

Completely off-topic but we had a guest with us the other day who got their gluten free bread on prescription, could be worth a go:D

Yes g/f bread can be had on prescription, but it's very high carb and not that palatable.
There are lower carb and more palatable breads on the super market shelves. (£2.99 a loaf) 😡

I've also heard of someone getting glucose tablets on prescription (for a child), I've never tried to do that myself though. I think we cost the NHS enough anyway and don't object to buying those (in bulk!)
