Hello everyone, I have just been told by doctor I may have diabetes, I'll know for sure after the 29th of this month, when I'm having a blood test and a sample, my diet is a mess at the moment just used to eat and drink what I want, lots of sweets lately found a site that sells them cheep so I've been over doing things, I'm going to try to eat better from now on and start using my exercise bike I have sitting in the corner gathering cobwebs, health and happiness to all Ivor121

Welcome from me, too @Ivor121. Out of interest, why does your GP think you may have diabetes?

I had a blood test last month. She phoned me about my medication review i asked about my blood pressure which seems to be ok, then I remembered about last time I had a blood test when the doctor looked she said I should come in for blood test and urine sample and the 29th was the only day I could get, I could have had test at the hospital but not a good traveller

Welcome to the forum @Ivor121

I would imagine that the blood checks you have been having may have included HbA1c, this is a way of measuring your exposure to glucose over the previous 3-4 months (it measures changes in red blood cells which generally last up to 120 days until they are recycled).

Many GPs want 2 readings above the diagnostic cut-off to confirm a diagnosis (at risk of diabetes 42-47mmol/mol, diabetes 48mmol/mol and above). HbA1c is a fairly slow-moving measure. So while the forum would definitely encourage you to continue to make those positive changes to your menu, don’t be disappointed if it takes a little while for the changes to be fully reflected in your HbA1c results.

Welcome Ivor to this forum

A change in your diet for one which is healthier sounds as if it is needed regardless of whether you do get a diabetes diagnosis. But if you do fall into the category then having a read of this link may reassure you that there are plenty of options for reducing your carbohydrate intake and still have filling tasty meals. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Hi @Ivor121 and a very warm welcome from me too 🙂 . It does sound like you've been over-indulging with the sweeties a bit so that would be a good start to cut right back on those. Keep us updated ....

Thank you. There's no more sweets in the house, does lockets count, I have a few packets, and how about other medicines like cough mixture, lemsip etc

Hello Ivor, I'm new here too, check in regular you'll learn a lot from this place. I thought it was all about sweets but how wrong I was as I found out on my first day in here

I think these type of things used for medicinal purposes are usually OK as use is generally for a short period of time to alleviate symptoms which are unpleasant and the sooner you can rid of whatever it is the better as being unwell can raise blood glucose anyway.
There may be sugar free versions of you favourite cure all.

That's good, temptation out of the way 🙂 . I tend to only buy sugar free options for cough lozenges, medicine etc. and there are lots on the market now. I think Lockets have quite a lot of sugar but it really depends on how many you are eating....
