Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi All, I am Neo, I'm 65 and I've got prediabetes with a reading of 47mmol/mol so I believe (this is all new to me) that i'm right on the cusp of having type 2 diabetes. I've thrown myself cold turkey into a low carb way of life.
I was 15st and now after a month of next to no more, bread and potatoes, and zero pastries, double chocolate muffins, kit kats, twirl bars, magnums, mint choc chip ice-cream, cereals, pizza, lasagña and so on i weigh in at 14st 9lbs.
I weigh myself every sunday morning but it's disheartening to see that the scales hardly move at all despite changing my food choices so radically.

It's great to have found this forum and hello to my new friends.
Neo.

Welcome to the forum @neo

Don’t fret too much about the amount of weight you have, or haven’t lost at this stage. This is a marathon not a sprint! 🙂

From the sound of things you’ve made some pretty big changes, and from the sounds of things your metabolism will have been given a much easier time of things without all those extra empty carbs.

Hopefully your follow-up HbA1c will give you some encouragement of improved BG levels.

When are you next due to have a review with your GP or nurse?

Hi everydayupsanddowns, thanks for your reply, The diabetic nurse at my surgery has given me guideline info on low carb foods to make up the majority of my diet, foods to eat in moderation and foods to limit or avoid. I have been put on a waiting list for a group course on eating/excersise to avoid diabetes and I will be given an appt to have a blood test in 12 months time.
The nurse said "as I am prediabetic, I am not eligible to recieve the tests and screening that a diabetic patient would recieve".
The nurse ran through my current new lifestyle meal choices and said that "I was doing the right thing".
My pot belly has been gross for far too many years and i'd dearly love to get rid and i'm now impatient I guess to trim down now that I have to, I am quite active and reasonably fit but I think some serious swimming at the local leisure centre and static bike riding are called for.
Thanks for your help.
Neo.

The decisions on whether you are entitled to the tests must be a local decision as I certainly had eye and foot checks and a repeat HbA1C after three months.
The NHS dietary guidelines are often higher carbohydrate than many can tolerate but it is better to reduce carbs gradually as you are less likely to get issues with your eyes and nerves especially if you have had a pretty high carb diet before. You sound to have made some good changes and have upped your exercise plans.
Have a look at this link as it is a low carb approach which many have found successful at losing weight and reducing blood glucose based on Real food, https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
I found following the principals in the link I reduced my HbA1C from 50mmol/mol to 36mmol/mol and lost about 12kg, still more weight to lose but exercise not back to where I would like it to be as I am still recovering from knee surgery.
