Hello,

Had no lunch at home today and had to get a takeaway with my daughter. She had beef burrito with all the trimmings.

Bearing in mind it was 2.30pm and it was way past my lunchtime, I was really hungry.

I ordered a spicy grilled chicken salad with a bit of humus as well as two falafels, plus a bottle of water.

My daughter wanted a cookie so she got a white chocolate one (yummy) and I had a cup of tea with no milk (yuk).

My BG reads after 2hr 30 mins was 7.0. so not bad.

What I am saying is for me, at home it is all a bit controlled, but outside in the real world, it is so so difficult, especially when the temptation starts or when you a with someone and have to say no. To understand me, I am difficult and so used to very big meal, very high in carbs and always enjoyed hot food. I am stubborn, so don't like the idea of taking a healthy salad or low carbs snacks with me, even though that could help.

For me it is all about enjoying my food and if my BG go over a little over, I'm not worried at all. I am happy to take a little risk now and to then, but I now understand and can deal with it.

i have made quite a few changes with getting my BG under control including: reducing my medicine, going on a low carb diet, so far I losing 5kg in 3 weeks, with exercise at all, so think I ahve done well, HOWEVER. I cannot take all the praise, I could not have done this all without the help and kindness of everyone on this forum. So a big thank you very much.❤️❤️❤️

Well done on making compromised choices whilst eating out. It should be a treat but not go too silly. It sounds to me like you hit a good balance, so well done..... Did you not even have a crumb from your daughter's cookie?? Be honest? Having said that, a tiny taste can somehow be harder than avoiding altogether.

I have to say, I really think you have done amazingly over the short period since you joined the forum. You really have embraced the changes. Don't think you are alone in making sacrifices with food. Many of us love our food and found (and still find) those choices, particularly when eating out with others, difficult. Finding a balance is by far the hardest part but you made a great start today and you must be so proud of yourself for losing that weight and cutting back on your medication whilst still seeing better BG levels. We can only advise people. Putting it into practice is the hard part and you take all the credit for that.... perhaps along with your good lady who I believe does most of the cooking from wat you have said.

As time passes you should not feel so hungry - ever.
I got up late today and just now thought that I ought to start dinner, as I have not eaten anything at all today. Did not even think about food all day.

Hi Barbara,

You are so kind and have provided me loads with invaluable help and advice, so a big thank you

I am not really that sweet toothed, like proper apple crumble with custard, but did well and did miss out on the cookie, not surep my daughter would have given me anyway! I really did miss milk with my Tea that was painful.

Regardihg my wife, she is the boss and also a fantastic cook. I always say that she is the most sensible one in our marriage (married 29 years now).

For my Tea today, she made me Lamb and Okra curry, which I had with salad and not chapati (not done that before) and it was fantastic, she cooked it in a clay pot on gas and used fresh ground spices...am so so lucky.

It's great to comprise and I passed a small test today, the next big challenge will be eating at restaurants and my family do really eat well and enjoy the food.

I think the only thing I want to add is that there are many people who do so well to control their BG (over years), so it's early days for me, but am mindful there are some many people who struggle and don't have the knowledge/ willpower/motivation other medical factors etc (not looking at any blame) especially during these difficult times. However, this forum is invaluable and great, we all can learn, share and support each other and that is priceless.

Thank you Drummer

You right, it is mind over matter!

I got up late today and had greek yogurt and blueberries for breakfast, rather than my daily toast (my usual for years), thinking that I would get hungry after 1 hour or so but I didn't.

But I don't want to skip 3 meals a day though

Also being a Muslim we have a full month of fasting (Ramadan) where no food or water is permitted at certain times, so don't want in the act too early!

I used to do a lot of cooking using earthenware pots, in my native Yorkshire they were a traditional way of cooking food in the ovens beside or behind the fireplace.
At least Ramadan is now moving back into cooler months and shorter days - in the Northern temperate zone - not that I observe it but I think it is a good thing to be aware of when it occurs, as with the major events in other calendars.
The lack of hunger is due to there being less call for insulin, so no swift reduction in the blood glucose, which is what seems to generate the sensation of hunger. A couple of slices of toast would not only raise my blood glucose but eventually result in a swift fall, but my usual breakfasts keep me going for 12 hours easily.

Wow sounds amazing and truly the best way to cook (as well as a proper barbeque).

Oh dear, you mentioned Yorkshire and I am from Lancashire, but no fighting on this friendly forum, but dont we beat you at cricket?lol.❤️

BTW. I am not a preacher of religion and I say faith unites us all - I respect all people whether they believe in God or not, everyone to their own. Regarding Ramadan fasting, if you are not well you do not need to fast, you just feed poor families instead (in my case I am become very poor in that month!)

That's impressive, 12 hours, I don't think I will last 4 hours.

7?
That's a normal, now me diabetic score.
No problem there, don't stress it.

Yes, thanks no problem there.

Why did you not have milk in your tea if that's what your used to and like? xx

Very wise @Newbie777 Food isn’t an enemy. I see meals as both a taste experience and crucially an opportunity to get in some important nutrients. Skipping breakfast or/and lunch just deprives people of opportunities to get that nutrition in.

I have got used to unsweetend almond milk and I don't want to go back to normal milk.. it is a slippery slope as I love extra milky latte and that would be the next thing for me (3 cups a day) so I guess trying out my willpower in small steps

A splash in a cup of tea when out would do no harm, don't deny yourself too much as that too can lead to issues xx

I agree.

Consistency is the key, even if I am not that hungry, it is important to me, otherwise I will be grazing all day and not on something healthy and balanced like a meal.

Yes I agreeand could have done, but I have bigger tests coming up..

I can easily eat 2000 plus calories in one evening meal out with the family, carb intensive.

Small steps...

this is completely off topic, but I noticed, you said Yorkshire

supposed to be a hotbed of weird paranormal activity up there

Paul Sinclair's Truth Proof books, are pretty errie

Oh ok, not read them.

There are good things from Yorkshire, Tea and Puddings

Oh I am sure, there, are, countryside always looks, beautiful, salt of the earth and homely, I was just curious, given, the strange stories covered in these books

May I suggest @Newbie777 you try the milk-less tea a heck of a lot weaker?

When I gave up milk in tea, I found the normal strength tea far too harsh, but I gradually discovered that if it is very weak it becomes almost aromatic and to my taste much better.
I only now have trouble with tea if somebody leaves the teabag in too long, or adds milk automatically (which to me now tastes totally sour!) and I am too polite to refuse it.

just a thought!

Thank you will try that.Thank you.

I did drink flavoured tea in the summer but I guess that may be out now, so green tea or tea with almond milk is ok.
