Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi - I’m new to the forum.
Hope someone can advise.
I’ve been diagnosed with type 2 a couple of years ago and taking metformin, I’ve not been great with managing it, my figures are usually between 8 - 10. Recently I have been itching all over my body, especially back of my shoulder, both arms and legs, this has been going in for approx 3 weeks now. E45 cream has eased it a little but still feel itchy, is this itching be caused by not managing my diabetes?

I would certainly suspect it - I have not seen 8 for a long time, 7 and a bit is a high after eating these days.
I'd really recommend trying to lower your levels just for general safety, and hopefully the itching will subside as you do. Once I started to lower my numbers, they kept on going down even though I was not constantly reducing what I ate, it seemed that I had restarted a process which was beneficial and it simply kept going and improving things for me.

Hello @Skirsthelimit welcome to the forum.

Sorry you are having itchy skin issues can drive you mad, the skin is the largest organ
the body has and like you I`m plagued with itchy skin especially my legs, chest and back.
If you haven`t already speak with your Dr before you do anything else, different area`s
may require different medication as I have, as @Drummer says try to bring your levels
down which may help.

Hopefully as you`ve only had it three weeks it won`t become a long term problem for you,
please let us know what happens and stay in touch.

Welcome to the forum @Skirsthelimit

Sorry to hear about your itchiness - sounds maddening, and very uncomfortable :(

Diabetes can cause itching and changes in sensation on the skin in a number of ways (including changes to nerves, and an increased opportunity for skin irritation).

What other changes have you made alongside your metfromin? Tablets can certainly help, but they are only part of the picture alongside changes to your eating plan, and activity levels.

Your BGs will probably benefit from reducing the amount of carbohydrates you are eating (not just sugary things, but smaller portions of starchy carbs like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and cereals too)

Sometimes it can be a good kickstart to keep a brutally honest food diary for a couple of weeks to really see what you are eating and drinking in a week - as lots of it can be unconscious grazing that is all too easy to forget!

Hope you can find relief from your itching. Do mention it to your GP too, as not everything os diabetes-related!
