Just wondered has anyone developed itching after taking Metformin? It comes and goes sometimes hands, feet, body. Think I’m being hyper vigilant, I do have health anxiety. Didn’t have this symptom before I started medication

Hi @Newbie6525, I have itching in the groin area although I had it before I started on the Metformin and I think it is a symptom of diabetes. That said, mine could also be down to the washing powder my wife uses so I don't panic about it too much. I also have a rash on the lower back which may or may not be from the Metformin, although I think it is the latter. But as it doesn't cause me any real issues again I don't panic.

Have you checked with your surgery (GP/Diabetes Nurse) to see if it could be a reaction to the medication? They may be aware of whether this is a known side effect. Alternatively they may want to review the issue with you to see if it is caused by something else.

Thanks, I’ve got a phone appt with nurse tomorrow so I’ll see what she says. I just find any new symptom sends me into a panic!

It could be thrush, people with diabetes are especially prone to it. It can appear anywhere on the body, but especially in slightly sweaty places that don't get a lot of air e.g. armpits and groin. The nurse can supply a tablet to be taken orally or you can purchase over the counter if you see the pharmacist.

Itching in the groin area could be thrush (a yeast infection), people think it is only women who get it but men can as well. The pharmacy should be able to supply an anti fungal cream like Canesten, people with high blood glucose are more susceptible to fungal infections.

There’s a delightful expression for it imported from the US - jock itch
