Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Morning everyone.
I'm now on 4 5oo mg metformin went to bed my stomach was really sore and the bottom of my back woke up so thirsty drank a bottle of water I haven't been checking my bloods because I 've been good I 've lost 21lb s..but I checked my b.s. and it was 12.6 could this be making me really sore back and achey. Thank you

Hi. I'm guessing you might be going down with something, which is causing the aches and high BGs.
I hope whatever the cause , you feel better soon.

Hi Shirley...one of the side effects of Metformin can be lower back or side pain...in addition to a bad stomach...just wondering how long you've been taking the Metformin...I had similar problems when I started taking it...after a week or so...it settled down...if it continues...speak to your GP...wondering which type of Metformin you take?...the standard one does seem to cause more problems...bad digestion...stomach upset...Diarrhoea and so on...if you are on the standard one...you could ask for a change to the extended release one...which a lot of members here say is 'gentler' on the system...your BG level of 12.6 is high...could be any number of things that could account for that...could you test your BG a little more consistently...could be something you've eaten...possible signs of infection...unless you are testing regularly...difficult to say what could have spiked it...as said could be any number of things...side effects will be detailed in the instructions that come with your medication...have a look through them...any concerns...then call your local surgery...what are your usual waking levels...I know you say 'I've been good'...but...you'd be surprised what can raise/lower those levels...hope you get this resolved soon...good luck.

Yeah I have had the bad stomach and feeling sick and the other lovely things I think it's been 2 months since I was diagnosed so I 've been feeling alright. My nurse doesn't want me to test myself or my husband as he says I'll just worry. But I knew I haven't felt right since last night I will had a yog and take my meds then check again after 2 hrs. Thank you

It's a pity people say 'you'll only worry' when testing gives you such important information! How on earth are you expected to know what foods affect you when you don't test? Carry on with the testing, Shirley, you have our permission :D ! And I had a lot of, er, stomach problems when first taking Metformin (known as Metfartin....).

I do hope you feel better soon, but if you've caught a bug or the lurgy then it might explain a lot.

A single blood glucose test of 12.6mmol/l doesn't tell you much. It's higher than it should be (aim for 4 - 8 on rising and before meals), but not the reason, which could be because your medication isn't sufficient to manage your condition / too much carbohydrate / infection etc. Sore back can be a side effect of metformin.
Best to see your GP to discuss options and / or pharmacist, no appointment needed, to discuss medication.
