good appointment with GP last week...bloods all good...excellent control...one hiccup Cholesterol still high...7.6 in total...we discuss Statins...consider breakdown HDL...LDL...Trigs...since Triglyceride & HDL now in normal range...believe statins not necessary at this stage...suggest reassess at next review...he said would not give my decision his blessing...but we could make a joint decision...no statins (this time)...just checking my appointment time later online...see he has noted 'Statins declined' in my notes...not sure how I feel about that?

His covering his behind @Bubbsie, so don't worry about it. You need to do your research on statins regarding females Bubbsie end of the day it's your choice and yours alone.

Thanks Sue...we had such a 'grown up' reasonable discussion about it...just surprised by his comments...yes...had considered he was covering his own back...can see why...but...done some research...decided statins not for me at this stage...see what next review brings.

Have you read 'The Great Cholesterol Con'? I found it helpful in presenting the alternative arguments about cholesterol, which helps to make a decision about these things 🙂 I've no doubt they are very helpful for some people, but it's also reasonable to bear in mind that they are pretty powerful medications.

Yes I have Alan...and several other sources...the general consensus seems to be (in my lay persons understanding) that Cholesterol does not protect you from an initial heart attack...however...if you have had one...it may prevent you from having a second...given what I have read...side effects etc... muscle fatigue and so on...plus the fact that I take Warfarin (indefinitely) which can interact with statins...and the improvement in my Trigs & HDL...I have decided it is not for me...at this stage...however as you point out...it is helpful for some...and it is very much an individual decision for those offered it...

I discovered recently , why the Doctor who took over from retired Doctor never mentioned Statins, I have been recorded as allergic to them .
I too agree Doctor is covering that you have had the discussion.

The Practice have tick boxes to record things more briefly. It also makes collating the data they have possible for reviews that they do or are required to do.

I would not worry. It is your health and you made a joint decision to not take statins. Keep the conversations giong with your GP and remember he is there to help you manage your own health, exactly as you do.

(You are involved in some in service training for him and look what progress he has already made. Congratulations on being such a good teacher.)

Think you give me too much credit SB...not so much training...more like dogged persistence & copious amounts of reading:D...however...sod it...I'll take the credit...yes we've made progress...may it continue...thank you.

Grovesy...at least tha'st one battle you won't need you need to have😉.

I would not have a battle as i would just refuse to take them. Tell them i was making an informed decision.

Same here grovesy...seem to be dishedout relentlessly...had no idea how many side effects they had until I started researching them...scared me!!

Good Trigs & HDL basically cancel out high LDL. And not all LDL is bad. Dense is bad, big & fluffy is good.

Did my research Mark...told him that...he was surprised...said the lab didn't break it down that far...but...my understanding is if Trigs & HDL are okay...indicates LDL is likely to be the buoyant Kind...as opposed to the small dense LDL.
