Much Missed Member.
Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Okay, I requested access to my medical records online and, just found, it had been given.
This is the summary of my first blood test that gave me the diabetic 2 diagnosis.
It means little to me, but I can see it is above the normal - but to what extent?

GLYCOSYLATED HAEMOGLOBIN
Haemoglobin A1c level 7.4 % [4.0 - 5.9]
Above high reference limit
Haemoglobin A1c level - IFCC standardised 57 mmol/mol [20.0 - 41.0]
Above high reference limit
HbA1c => 48 mmol/mol is diagnostic of Diabetes

Normal range is 20-41, prediabetic is 42-47, diabetic is 48 and over.

So 57 is a bit over. Not crazy high (many people are diagnosed with HbA1c of over 100).

It may well be that with tolerable changes to your diet and some increase in exercise you can reduce it to below 48 again. That's not guaranteed, so don't feel guilty if that's not possible for you and you end up needing medication too.

The "7.4%" and the "57" are the same thing, just using different units.

They include both in order to confuse you more 🙂

As Bruce says, 57 isn't panic-stations-high, and you have plenty of time to work out a strategy for getting it lower.

Thank you. I will see what the next blood test comes back as. I have lost close to a stone (2 pounds short when I last weighed myself). I hope I am doing enough. Still on a learning curve.

Medium

The lost weight should help reduce the HBA1C so hopefully the next test will show it has reduced. Just keep the carbs down in what you eat.
