Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Just a question solely out of interest to see if it's normal or whether I'm a bit stupid.

Have you ever forgotten your insulin injection?

Reason being is that I sometimes think 'I did it when I didn't and didn't when I did' :D

I guess it was better in the old days as you had reminders from bruises and fluid bubbles under skin - hows that for looking on the bright side.

I am thinking of investing in a reminder system - think you can get something that fits to insulin pens so it's obvious there's others that have done so but interesting to see if it is a common thing.

Thanks and take care all - oh and a belated Happy New Year!

Oh yes! I've stood there with the pen in my hand thinking, did I, didn't I? Now I'm on Novorapid and Levemir, I can use a Novopen Echo, which records when you last injected and how many units. It's saved me many a time! I don't think there's a corresponding pen for Sanofi products, like Lantus, but I think you're right, you can get a device that fits on to the pen.

I used to struggle with this a bit and got a (now discontinued) Memoir pen to help.

There are a number of options...

There are various replacement insulin pen caps which can tell you whether or not the cap has been removed (for longer than to quickly check insulin lelevel)

You can also get pens with inbuilt memory, such as the Novopen Echo.

Haha! posted at the same time as Robin!

I forgot my luntus only the other week, didn’t realise until hours later!

It does happen, but not that much.

So annoying when it does so feel your pain xx

I print off a calendar every month which I fix to my 'fridge door. I enter the 'breakfast' 'lunch' and 'dinner' injection doses and cross them through with a marker pen once I have injected. My memory is not what it is once so it helps.

When on Injections I had this issue. It became so automatic to inject that I couldn’t remember whether I had done it. I used the junior novooens and attached an Insulchek to the end which told me when I last injected. There are other pens that have this incorporated now. Very useful.
I also
- put the wrong cartridge in the bolus pen
- forgotten to do basal
- forgotten to do bolus
- ....

On the pump I have the facility to check the data which shows any insulin that has been delivered.

Forgetting whether you have injected is easily done, so you are definitely not alone.

I shall research a bit but hadn't seen anything on the Echo so another to research. Thanks for the suggestions and reassurance.
My memory isn't as good as it was for sure so might be time for an investment.

I have forgotten to inject too - once or twice I got halfway through dinner and suddenly remembered, and once I got to bedtime and wondered why my reading was so high, and then realised I hadn't injected before dinner.
I have also injected basal instead of bolus, injected bolus instead of basal, injected bolus and then been unable to eat, and a number of other stupid things which I now forget. My excuse is that I have another illness which causes cognitive dysfunction, but I'd probably have done these things even if I hadn't, it's all too easy when something has become routine and you do it without thinking much about it.
I have Novopen Echos for both basal and bolus now, but they only record the last time they were used, so once you've done a test squirt you can't see when or how many units you last injected, which could lead to standing there with the pen in your hand thinking "did I just inject and then do another test squirt ... ?"

Oh - hell yes! - I still quite often forget to test or bolus before starting to eat - however I'm married so I always look accusingly at my husband if its just us, or eg daughter if we're eating there - and demand to know why the hell they didn't tell me I was diabetic before letting me start my dinner?

Otherwise as SB said, I can check my pump very easily and quickly to see the last bolus but still frustrating that I didn't test before eating.

Hey ho, just another part of the rich tapestry of life with diabetes!

Pre-pump, and without the opportunity to check, I've also been so cinvinced that I'd forgotten to dose for a meal that I dosed 'late', only to realise some hours later that I HAD actually dosed after all, and now had double the insulin sloshing around.

Yup, all of the above! Now on the pump you can at least check, although like trophywench I am often halfway through my dinner when I remember. Also have been known to bolus for my breakfast, go to work, wonder why I feel odd and realise I left my porridge in the microwave....
What insulin are you on, Jonathan? If it is Novorapid then you should be able to just ask for a change of pen on perscription - the echo is the half unit pen. It was certainly a huge help to me.

Yes to all the above too! Have I, haven't I, did I, didn't I, looking at the pen going hmmmm! Bolused for breakfast once, something happened so didn't get to eat it or eaten and forgot to bolus for it...oh the joys of D and life's diversions 🙄

Who hasn't?!! I have a teenager, and even with a pump he manages to forget occasionally. The double doses are the scary ones though, when he forgets he's already bolused his insulin and does it a second time. Fortunately a rare occurrence, and he's slim and active enough to be able to eat a mass of extra carbs if he needs to 😱😉
