that gets a bit fed up with being told on the media and elsewhere that people who get Diabetes are obese and have been living a bad life style ,smoking and drinking and it is implied that they deserve it?
I have , in my life , been a bit overweight - not much, and been a vegetarian for nearly 50 years. Never smoked and only drunk in moderation these last 5 years ( one glass of wine with a meal)
I am now slim and eat even more healthily .

It is irritating , am I just becoming a grumpy old woman?

Moan over :(

No Ann not just you, the media like to highlight all the bad things when it comes to diabetes, not many times do you see any good things mentioned, and if theres an article about type 2 theres bound to be a piccy of some flabby person.

Definitely not just you Ann! I have always hated the way they lump everyone together and imply that the only way you are going to get diabetes is if you don't look after yourself :( I was due to run a marathon the week I was diagnosed for goodness sake! And when I emailed an old friend and told her she started opining about bad diet and sedentary lifestyles, assuming that was what caused my diabetes.

It is no doubt true that a lot of people might avoid diabetes if they looked after themselves better, but it's certainly not the case with everyone. Nor does everyone who leads a poor lifestyle develop diabetes. I suppose you can't blame the public when all they hear is that diabetes is a 'lifestyle' disease.

there are alot more 'obese' folks without the D than are .....🙄 i lead a so called healthy diet too ...lots of fruit, cereals, musiel, freash fruit juice etc oops 😱

Not just you Ann. I get sick of it too. Like many others I always had a healthyish lifestyle before the D but have had lots of comments about it being my fault I have it now. It puts me off telling people that I have it.

Interesting comment from my consultant the first time I saw him. I mentioned the fact that I thought I'd looked after myself before diagnosis and that my diet has been really good since too. He said that I would probably have got D eventually no matter what I did and that my healthy lifestyle probably prevented me from getting it a lot earlier than I did. XXXXX

It doesn't bother me at all, but then I was obese and I did feel (quite rightly) that I was to 'blame'.

Of course more was going on than just my poor lifestyle, but in my case (and I suspect many others) it was no coincidence that my symptoms eased when I lost the weight and improved my lifestyle.

However, having said that, I agree that most media reports are not balanced or complete in their detail.

Andy 🙂

I hate to admit it, but having recently been diagnosed IGT and working hard to avoid full blown D, I have avoided telling certain judgmental people about my diagnosis for fear they may judge me! This incudes my own sister (who incidentally is very skinny but drinks like a fish but I feel has always judged me in terms of my weight). This also because my dad and grandmother were diabetic and I feel I have almost landed myself in this position by not ensuring I was thinner and exercised more. Like others here though, my doctor told me that genetics is the driving factor and that D likely will (in spite of anything I could have done or will do) get me in the end and that the weight part only brings it forward. People are so ignorant sometimes!

I think we all get sick of the ignorance that is out there. That is why on diagnosis many of us feel unable/unwilling to let people know about it. It is very sad, that anyone who is unfortunate enough to have diabetes, also has to feel guilty too.

Just thought i'd add my voice to the annoyed chorus...hehehe

Seriously, i'm a firm believer that nobody deserves any illness, disease or condition. Ok, i don't enjoy exercise or cookery so i'm a tad overweight, but as somebody above quite rightly pointed out, there are a heck of a lot of larger people than me out there and loads and loads of them don't have type 2 diabetes. Nobody is "asking" to get diabetes, any more than anybody is "asking" to get cancer or HIV. We're all just unlucky.

I'd love to see just how many of these judgemental people pointing fingers at people with diabetes live faultless, healthy lives. Pots and kettles, ignorance, prejudice and an awful lot of 'I'm alright Jack' :(

I think the media are always getting it wrong , which makes it harder for those who have trouble coping in the first place. The doc reckon i got it coz i had to be given steriods as a baby , not because of my lifestyle!

I get slightly hacked off that people are judgemental about Himself developing diabetes at 42, and presuming that it's Type 2 and he's fat.

And that the GMNT is as well.

Err... NO! Both Type 1, thankyouverymuch. And MUCH easier to deal with than Type 2, thank goodness. Not all the Type 2's I've come across are over weight, either. Sometimes you just get stuffed with the brown sticky stuuff...

What bothers me the most is the publics view on diabetes. I know most arent around a diabetic but the media makes it hard for people to understand. We are only ever told about the cost on the nhs and obesity. And it really niggles at me when they dont reference which type they mean.

Or how much MORE it would cost long term if they WEREN'T treated...

druggest

i was at a local cafe today

one of our druggest was there

and over heard him talking

he was telling the people he was with

being fat was what causes a person to have diabetes

he has been a druggest for over 20 yrs

and you would think he knew what he was talking about

but to come across with this he is just dumb

One of the causative links between fat and type 2 diabetes is explained in this recent research ...

The problem is obesity is so much in the media and Type 2 is on the increase that the two are put together. I have had type 1 for over 20 years and even then, in the 80's, Type 2 was more to do with being over 40, unfit and overweight( as it was called then).
I know a lady in her 60's who is very petite and has Type 2, her lifestyle and weight have always been good, so I guess she was just unlucky with the hand she ( and other people) were dealt with.

I see 'obese' people in mobility cars nowadays. Also a large number of overweight people are drinking fizzy drinks, eating chips, burgers, sausage rolls, milk shakes, crisps etc in the shops and out and about. They know the consequences of what they are doing to their bodies, but I'm afraid society nowadays has become quite a lazy one and the general public have to put the blame of rising costs of the Health Service onto to someone and Type 2's get alot of it. Not everyone is to 'blame' for their condition.

I gave up smoking because of what could be happening to my insides, boy was it hard, but with willpower and determination I did it, it would of been so much easier (and the lazier option) for me to carry on.

So Ann, when people hear about Type 2, the word obesity and lifestyles, they put 2 and 2 together and come up with 5! Take care all you Type 2's and if anyone makes a remark about the stigma that's attached with Type 2, tell them Type 1 was full up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! best wishes Sheena

Probably about 10% Alan, when they are having a fag with a pint and then a nice big, dripping with fat, Kebab. It's the old saying of 'Do as I say and not as I Do! Sheena

another reason not to watch news read paper or listen to news which is more biased than a loaded dice!

Well , at least I found one, or two decent posts here...What's this...beat the Fatties thread!!!!!!
Yes, I am Fat very fat...But I also have a vast amount of other health problems for years that have meant I have become disabled and becuase I have severe mobilty problems, I have gained weight...Hey, I'm one of the fatties with a Mobility Car!!!!...But, I didn't get it because I was fat, nor did I get it because of any reason to do with my weight!

I think the majority of the posts here are insensitive and Jugdemental...To be honest Alan, I began to notice posts like this alot....'Oh, please don't think I am one of those type 2's that is FAT!!!!!'

We have a divide I think?.....Skinny and type 2...your ok!!!

I hardly eat at all, I am too bloated to eat, I can't even drink the fluids I need, let alone eat a huge meal!!!!...People just don't understand, it's like the worst thing anyone could be is.....FAT!!!!!!!
