Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Just heard the new updated measures on bbc about coronavirus. Underlying conditions 12 weeks self isolating . Does that include diabetics? I am off work due to a cold and now i am scared to return as i work in a supermarket. Where do i stand . I dont want to catch this neither having diabetes causes more serious implications with coronavirus .

Haven't got the answer for you, just wanted to acknowledge how confusing it is. Hopefully this group will be able to give some more clarity & encouragement.

I think you may be confusing self isolating with social distancing. Self isolating is what you need to do to prevent spreading disease to others if you are currently unwell... whether that be cold, flu, Covid19 or any other virus. Social distancing is less restrictive by my understanding, but is a measure to safeguard people who are vulnerable to Covid 19.... and protect the NHS from (excessive) overload. It would not necessarily stop you going out and about in public but the idea is to not engage in close contact with people, so avoiding areas where people are near you like a crowded bus or pub etc.

As someone with diabetes I believe that you would be in that vulnerable group who may be advised to socially distance themselves for up to 12 weeks to protect them, but I am not sure that advice has been implemented yet. They are trying to get the timing right so that the 12 weeks doesn't have to be extended. I would have thought it might make more sense to stagger it according to the number of cases in each area as I am sure there must be bigger clusters of outbreak in some parts of the country than others, making the risk in those areas much higher, but I guess that would be more confusing.

That is my understanding of it anyway.

Also the self isolation is not 12 weeks full stop, it is initially 12 weeks.
My son went back to work today having been off work for 10 days, they have now saying it is back up to 14 days. Though the WHO are now advising 14 days after symptoms have gone.

Mat Hancock has just said that anybody with a pre-existing condition which merits isolation for a prolonged period to in an attempt to prevent them becoming infected will get a letter next week from the NHS advising them what to do.

Mean while many people continue to have high levels of anxiety.
I wonder what criteria they will use.

I think we need to take a breath, and wait for clarification of what this latest announcement means for all (otherwise healthy) PWD. I am hoping this will emerge this evening and overnight.

I am not sure how much evidence there is of extra risk from well managed diabetes without additional conditions. At the moment it is wise to be careful and take precautions, but it won’t help you to panic unduly. 🙂

Its all clear as mud, isn't it.

Really ? I missed that thank you. So people with diabetes should possibly get a letter. I am petrified as i have my father who beat 3 different types of leukemia he had all at once and prior to that he was in the Falkland War whereby he was fortunate to have survived a hit on a boat and the other servicemen died except him which as you could imagine must have been incomprehensible, and now this bloody virus .. my mother is diabetic and always been active and social, my 4 daughters work like most people do in workplaces with others. I am so scared for them all. I am for our country. China needed to clean up thier country long before this. They have just said this virus could be with us for years to come. Starting to feel like giving up.

Thank you Mike.

I've had a message from work this evening saying i should seek advice from GP re attending work. I work in a school so will be ringing GP tomorrow. The more i hear and read, the more confused and worried i get though.

Well managed or not having diabetes can affect our immunity - meaning it may take us longer to recover from it. I asked the DN when I saw her last week.
I am still working whilst I can.

I know what you mean, it's scary times, its all a bit confusing. I am type 1 and socially distancing myself, not taking any risks as I work at a primary school

Well I've never taken longer than a non D to recover from whatever has ailed me - but I stress I've never had all that much wrong with me TBH. Nobody knows how anyone at all, let alone themselves, can or can't recover from CV19.

I don't take longer either.
