Is binging on a lot of "sugar free" stuff making me overeat?

Been binging on these no added sugar cookies during the football. Took my meds. Just tested my blood it's 9.2.

I also been scoffing that no added sugar chocolate.

I think since I was told my HBA1C was 37 I been scoffing a lot of food thinking I'm ok but it's not really ok at all. I don't want all the hard work to be undone.

How do I just stop myself?

Sugar free jelly is ok right?

Hi there - Unfortunately, that something is no sugar added doesn't mean it won't impact our blood sugars.

It could be useful to read the packaging for your cookies and identify what is sweetening the cookies. Not all artificial sweeteners are benign as far as our blood sugars are concerned. Some will increase our blood sugars.
Once you have identified the sweetener, just Google something like "does Sucralose (or whichever sweetener you have) increase blood sugars".

It's also easy to say that binging isn't too helpful, whether or not you live with diabetes, but I do appreciate there are times when that s easier said than done.

Your no added sugar cookies will likely still contain carbs because they will be made with flour and it is all carbs which are converted to glucose by our digestive system. You need to look at the total carb content of foods which will be in small print usually on the back of packaging, but binging is not good full stop as I am sure you are aware. Think about why you are binging. If you can't have just a normal portion of something then consider not buying them. Is it boredom or tension of watching the game.... Maybe consider chewing gum or drinking water as an alternative to break the tension if that is the case.... If boredom.... find a team that play more entertaining football 😉

Well I made a big mug of tea and sat down to watch the cup game. Disappointed City won't win all four now but hopefully if they win the rest and including the Champions League I won't be complaining too much.

Nevertheless I also don't want to undo all the hard work achieved lowering my BG levels. Now all the no added sugar stuff is gone I won't get them any more.

However it's been a few hours now since I ate the cookies and BG is 8.4 and having a huge headache.

I binged on those no added sugar cookies again and now I'm having a huge headache. Any advice what I can do to avoid or mitigate this in future?

Headaches like these really aren't nice :(

Hi Purple_Panda,

It's so tempting to over indulge on the 'sugar free' items as it feels like a bit of a treat but as mentioned above, that still doesn't address the carb amount.

If I were in your situation, I'd drink lots of water, maybe go for a walk and try and relax. Hopefully your numbers will return to normal soon and you can have a look at the total carb count of what you were eating and adjust accordingly.

I take paracetamol and drink plenty including an electrolyte drink for headaches which usually helps for me

Sorry to hear about your headache @Purple_Panda

No added sugar cookies aren’t going to be doing your diabetes many favours I wouldn’t think I’m afraid - because even though they may not have sucrose, they are still likely to be full of finely milled flour which the body will break down into glucose very speedily.

It is the total carbohydrate that you need to be mindful of, not just the sugar content.

I wonder if your headaches are connected to rapidly moving BG levels? Or if they are connected to whatever additive or chemicals they put in to the recipe to offset the lack of sucrose?

I hate to say it, but I think the best way to avoid these headaches is not to eat the cookies :(

When struggling with binging on certain foods, not keeping them in the house can be helpful for controlling your impulses. It’s hard to overeat on something you don’t have in. If the cookies make you feel ill and are hard to control portions, I’d stop buying them. I find shopping online for click and collect or delivery can make it easier to stick to buying the things you need and avoiding temptation, as you don’t walk around the whole store.

As the colleague above said, the decision is will! You tell yourself you stop and you won't eat them and that's it!
