Is a BG of 8.6 a normal "spike" after eating for diabetics and non-diabetics?

As per the title. I checked one finger it was 7.6, on another 8.6. I ate less than an hour ago. I ordered some McD's mcchicken and chicken mayo but without the buns (but with cheese). I''ve usually eaten this and after 90 minutes or so BG is actually really good like in the 4.5-5 range.

Is a BG spike of 8.6 too high or even considered high?

On another note daily readings (random) tend to be in the low 4s. Does that mean everything is working and maybe I could begin to slowly come off the meds?

It’s best to wait 2 hrs after eating to test. For in depth testing or for a fatty meal such as pizza I would test at 2 then three hrs afterwards. Do you test before eating as well to see what the difference is ?

Oops meant to say , it Loks like you caught the spike with that test
It’s quite normal and non Ds can go up to 10.0 mmol/l
It’s just that they come down more quickly than we do.

I think that the 2 hour test gives a better idea of how you are coping plus how good or bad a choice of foods it was.

I always used to test at half an hour purely to catch the top of the spike.
Two hours is a better time

I think it's worth pointing out that the ;cheese' on burgers isn't 'real cheese'. It is a more highly processed food designed to give a better 'mouth feel'.
Personally if I want cheese with a burger, I would grill some haloumi side by side with the patty.

Vegetarian Cheddar (51%) (Allergen Ingredient:MILK), Water, Vegetarian Cheese (9%) (Allergen Ingredient:MILK), Whey Powder (Allergen Ingredient:MILK), Butter (Allergen Ingredient:MILK), Emulsifying Salts (Trisodium Citrate, Citric Acid), Allergen Ingredient:MILKProteins, Natural Cheese Flavouring (Allergen Ingredient:MILK), Salt, Colours (Beta Carotene, Paprika Extract), Anti-Caking Agent (Sunflower Lecithin

Much the same as the cheese slices I grew up with in the seventies.
Nothing unnatural in there though.

Me, I make my own burgers, it has to be cheddar or red leicester with them.

True, but McD’s is a bad choice regardless due to the fat!

I would not panic about 8.6 personally its not a high spike so long as it drops below say 6 after 2 hours, believe the threshold you ought to aim for is 8.5 at 90 mins after meal

A local pub doesn't what I call a heart attack burger as it has black pudding, bacon. cheese and an egg and is about 6 inches high.
I agree home made are best but like blue cheese on mine.

Oh! blue cheese and red meat @Leadinglights - now you've got me drooling 😛

8.6 is a bit of a blip @Purple_Panda - but not an extreme one. Plus, of course it might have been 7.6, so most likely more like 8.1ish?

Do you know what the reading was before the meal? That will give you a big clue as to how your body reacted to that specific food. As you might have been 4, or equally 8.5. In which case you had quite a hefty rise, or no reaction at all! 🙂

Do they use seed oils?
I don't eat a lot of things which are considered mainstream - never had an Oreo for instance.

Any product that has to use emulsifiers to incorporate so much water that it appears as the second largest ingredient, definitely counts as unnatural in my book, and doesn’t whet my appetite in the slightest.

Water?
That is actually the main part of many things, including us. Water is only bad if you are drowning.

Yes, but do you want to pay for it at the same price as cheese?

I don't mind water where I expect water, but water in cheese or in meat such that they need lots of emulsifier in there? - No thanks, especially if I'm paying for it by weight as if it were real cheese or real meat!

Erm, lots of emulsifier?
Doesn't exist.
They don't do it, but you think MacDonald charge by the pound?
Again, Erm?
You buy a quick snack, that's all, it's not a rump steak.
They don't sell it as that.
It's just a quick snack.
And if you can show water in the meat, post it up.
They do not do it.
