I diagnosed diabetes two months before, my hba1c result was 4.6mmol, I did a sugar test (not hba1c) at home today on freestyle freedom lite and it comes back as 6.1. My question is if it is normal sugar test, does 6.1 is alarming (I know for HBA1c it is)

Thanks

Hi ikram, welcome to the forum 🙂 The answer to your question is no - it's not alarming, in fact it's perfectly fine! 🙂 The two things are entirely different as they measure different things. The HbA1c is a sort of average of your blood sugar levels over the 6-12 weeks prior to the test being made. It's normally expressed as a whole number these days using the units 'mmol/mol', but can also be given as a percentage. Have a read of the following to understand it better:

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/managing-your-diabetes/hba1c

A fingerprick test uses the units 'mmol/l' and is a kind of 'snapshot' of your levels at that moment.

4.6% for an HbA1c is pretty low, and 6.1 mmol/l for a fingerprick test is within the non-diabetic range, so neither is a problem 🙂 Also, 6.1% for an HbA1c would be considered non-diabetic, so I think you may have been misinformed if you thought otherwise 🙂

Hi

Thank you for the reply, I am very happy that it is not within diabetics range. I will discuss this with my local surgery again.

Thanks

HI

I have checked my result again and my last reading for hba1c was 46 mmol/mol

thanks

I thought that was probably what you meant!

But it's still a bit puzzling - normally I thought 48 was the level for diagnosing diabetes, and 46 would count as "pre-diabetic". Your surgery must have had some other reasons for diagnosing Type 2. But as you say, discuss it with them.

As far as finger testing is concerned, a lot depends on when you do it (how long after a meal and what you ate, how long after insulin, what activity you've been doing etc etc).

As long as you are fully aware of the factors, you'll be ok.
