Hi All
I have been following a low carb diet to lower my blood glucose levels because I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic last June, this ha worked well. However, I have recently been getting an irregular heartbeat which landed me in A&E on Saturday because it was lasting a quite a while.

I have seen this article which seems to suggest a link : https://www.acc.org/about-acc/press... a low proportion,of Cardiology's 68th Annual

Does anyone else on a low carb diet have experience of this or know if there is a potential link?

Ginny

I have palpitations daily. My heart flip flops all the time. I do worry about my low carb also. So would be interested to hear others maybe low carb long termer perspective. What I will say is there are a few other possibilities.
Low carb can effect electrolytes which cause palpitations, as can iron deficiency and one of the main contributes is anxiety.

That's interesting, I had a blood test for electrolytes when I saw my GP about my heart and one of my electrolytes was outside of reference limits

Urea and electrolytes
Serum sodium level 140 mmol/L [133.0 - 146.0]
Serum potassium level 4.6 mmol/L [3.5 - 5.3]
Serum creatinine level 99 umol/L [45.0 - 84.0]
Above high reference limit
eGFR using creatinine (CKD-EPI) per 1.73 square metres 54 mL/min [> 60.0]
Below low reference limit

Are you on any blood pressure medication as some of those can cause palpitations.

Although I think the creatinine is affected by having high protein before the test, and I ate a couple of handful of nuts a little while before the test.

I have been referred to wear a 48 hour ambulatory tape, I will ask the hospital if they know of a link while I am there.

Has anybody discussed this result with you?

Yes that’s right, but only slightly. Your electrolytes look good. Have you been particularly anxious? Sometimes we don’t realise we are ?

See I have problems with iron, well ferritin to be specific. Lowest my doctor had ever seen at 5. However my actual iron just scraped through so they said it was fine. I have recently started on iron supplements because I’m convinced this is what’s causing my tight chest and the flip floppy heart thing. I was putting it down to indigestion but I’ve started to capture these episodes on my I watch (which does not help my health anxiety) it’s definitely my heart.

To be honest, I'm more surprised that all the low carbers on here, and there are a few, haven't said it couldn't possibly be happening, so take from that what you will.

It's only because of the The American College of Cardiology paper I linked to that has made me wary - its good there hasn't been a big response!

I've never ever in my life eaten a diet containing more than 100g carbs a day - before I was T1 or since - an irregular heartbeat has never ever happened to me - and if it had I'd have done summat about it.

About the eGFR: if you were dehydrated during the blood test, it could have made your creatinine appear higher than it usually is and the eGFR is calculated based on you gender, age and creatinine level.
