I have been reading about this as a way of improving BG control. It seems that there are several different variants of this. Has anyone tried it? Does it work? 🙂
 
I am t2 with a very relaxed approach to "my" diabetes, i eat what i want and enjoy it and my current hb result was 50 down from 59 but what works for me may not work for you i do not exercise that is not in my dna i am a 55yr old bus driver when working i eat the same things for days on end tuna mayo in lidl protien roll celery cheese and abit of fruit, i always have a club biccy in my box my daily carb intake on work days is roughly round the 30-40 mark scrambled egg for brekky sometimes just a cup of green tea depending on mood and time and chicken or sausage curry for tea. on my non work days i tend to relax and have some chips or maybe a toastie etc and i also have some ice cream and a few wine gums.
Its not all doom and gloom which is what i thought when first diagnosed, using the above approach i have lost 7.9kg i intend to loose more currently 96kg at 6ft 1" and improved my bg results aswell. i hope you find a way that suits you and your life style. I am sure others will be along soon giving you better more sensible advice than mine 🙂
 
The idea of intermittent fasting piqued my interest and I decided to give it a go. In order to fit my lifestyle I decided that a long overnight fast would be my best option. On days when I'm not going out in the evening I try to have breakfast at c0800 and my evening meal at c1800...then nothing until breakfast the following day. It's difficult for me to gauge the impact of this strategy. I've been taken off the diabetic register...so something is working...but it may simply be the fact that I've lost weight and stuck to a calorie restricted LCFF diet. I'd say that it's worth trying.

I was advised don't fast unless it is for a blood tests or if I was going for an op. We are all different. What does your doctor say?

That's a normal day for me. I eat at 6pm, because I like to have any short acting out of my system by bedtime, then I don't usually have breakfast til about 9am because my insulin needs about 45mins to get going. Of course I snack at bedtime if my levels are too low, but that doesn't happen often because evening seem to be my most predictable time of day. I did experiment with an evening snack to see if it improved the Dawn Phenomenon, but it made very little difference to me.
 
My choce is a LCHF diet and nothing helps eating bad, ..eating within a 6hr window a day helps some too. 18:6 hour fast

Thanks for the heads up. I've just watched Dr Jason Fung's Youtube talk on 'the two compartment model' and intermittent fasting. What an excellent communicator. You don't need to be a brainiac to follow his argument and his style is extremely accessible. I've learned a lot.
 
Thank you for all the information. I saw the Jason Fung video and that was what made me think about this. I do not need to loose weight and I would not want to ask the doctor as he would not back this up. A friend of mine who is a GP advised against it because of my caring role and said that I cannot afford to risk being light headed. I might try two fasts per week to see if this has any effect. Thanks again for the comments and help, this is such a brilliant forum 🙂

I asked my DSN about fasting ages ago, as I'd read somewhere that type 1s aren't supposed to, and she said it was fine so long as it was occasional - but it turned out not to be possible for me at all, at least not on the basal insulin I have. As you say, we are all different. Are you on insulin? I can't think of any reason why it would be a problem for type 2s not on insulin, but maybe it depends on the individual and other health issues, etc.
 
No I am trying to manage with diet and exercise. I have brought my numbers down from 18.5 to 6.00 at last HbA1c, they had been slightly better than that so I am nervous that they are going up which is why I am looking at what else I can do. I have never been overweight and border on being underweight. My doctor is not a fan of LCHF or anything else. He is convinced that I will end up on insulin and is very put out that I will not take Metformin, which is why I don't want to ask him. I think that I could try a couple of fasts and see how it goes. Thank you for your help. 🙂
 
I am Canadian and have used ProLon (a Fasting Mimicking Diet) from the US. I actually enjoyed it and had really good improvements in my blood sugar. Unfortunately since I've moved here I haven't been using it but I hear it is coming to the UK soon.
 
I work with someone who does this. He is very strict on what he eats anyway as he is very fit. However I have noticed that he is very moody and short tempered on his fasting days ... Not saying that will happen to every one though

I would agree that I was a bit more agitated (mostly on days 2 or 3) but seem to improve as I did it more.
