Well that was an interesting trip to the consultant today.

My expectation was that he might see my 5.5% and either return me to GP management or not want to see me very often (primarily the consultant looks after Type 1's). But I got something quite different!

I've had my wrists slapped for not eating properly (apparently I'm starving myself a bit too often) and to my fears about my levels being worse if I introduce too much carb back, he wants to see more pre- and post- meal readings and a log of what I was eating. He has suggested that a sulfonylurea could be one possibility.

My assumption is that I am a Type 2 given the fact I do respond to Metformin (although there are some niggly details with post meal levels) and my levels did improve with a loss of weight.

Given my family history the consultant has decided to test me for defects in the HNF1 gene! (that's a good ?350 worth of testing) That test takes 10 weeks and there is a good chance that it will be negative as there is no-one in my family who got "type-2" diabetes under 25 (which is the usual genetic testing trigger).

So what I expected to be a quick hello-goodbye meeting is something a little different! and he wants to see me again in 6 months.

(I apologise to all those Type 2's who can't get anywhere close to a consultant)

All sounds good and thorough Mark!! Makes a change! 😉

Good news about the tests, but I'd have been very annoyed by the 'slap on the wrists'. What is *his* A1c? Presumably not too different, and based on eating a diet *his* body can cope with...

If you are happy on the diet you are on why must you be forced to add in a bunch of carbs (and then take meds to deal with them if that's what the sulf is for - plus adding the risk of hypo)?

Is your weight stable? What is the reasoning behind the suggested dietary change?

Unless of course you'd quite like to eat a few more carbs... in which case as you were! 😉

To be honest I've been having trouble keeping the weight on recently, so I've been bouncing below my target and then gorging myself to get back up again, then dropping back down again, repeat, etc.

It seems very sensitive to how many calories I'm consuming. It seems to be 2300-2500 cals to maintain, 2500 puts on weight, 2200 looses weight. I was expecting a larger cal plateaux where I would maintain weight.

I've not 100% comfortable with getting 50% of my daily calorie intake from nuts! I do struggle to find something to replace the nuts with that isn't high carb (Avocado's are good, but they are expensive).

Don't appologise for getting good care, it is nice to know someone has it. SOunds like things might improve for you from now on, good luck with it all and make the most of it.

Hi Mark.

It sounds as though you of medical interest (ie. use) to them, as much as them being interested in your welfare.🙄

If you can think of a load of questions to fire at him next time you see him, you might be able to get your money's worth from him before he decides he doesn't want to see you again (I might be a bit cynical 😱). 🙂

At least you'll get to know exactly where you stand so you can make your own choices in the future. And is fruit and veg on your menu in any sort of quantity ?

Rob

Plenty of calories in cheese and butter 🙂 (and depending on your lipid panel splits there seems to be a little room for manoevre in the targets) - eg keep your trigs down and eat to keep your HDL up

Hi Mark,

Its good that the consultant is taking such good interest in you. It will be interesting to see what the results say.

I will slap your back (not your wrist) for how well you have done.🙂

I hope you can stabilise the weight - could it just be the body taking time to get used to the new you?
