I ate fish and chips today. The real stuff and not my usual keto version.
Not a full portion but not a measly one either - two thirds of a cod in batter and I actually ate all the batter instead of just a teeny taste and a moderate helping of chips with home made tartare sauce and some lemon.

I was worried about what it would do to my levels.
I was 6.8 before I ate the meal and for the last few days I've been between 6.8 and 5.4 whenever I tested.

I didn't test my bloods straight after eating and I had a pot of peppermint tea and then got on with my activities for the day.

I tested about three hours after eating and I was 8.0

Then I tested again two hours later before having my evening meal - which was to be a keto chinese soup I make regularly as a light meal and before eating I was at 4.9 which is the lowest it has ever tested at.

Tested again after consuming my soup and it was still 4.9

Looks like having the fish and chips may have given my insulin production a bit of kick start? Or do you think it may have been the peppermint tea? I have used peppermint tea before to bring levels down but it hasn't ever had this big an effect.

I shan't be doing it again for a while but it is an interesting thing to have happened.

Foods like fish and chips, or lots of other options with both fat and carbs, the blood glucose curves can be a bit unexpected. By that, I mean some people find they experience multiple spikes and sometimes with T2s a bit of an insulin overshoot, resulting in post carb-fest lows.

This would have been a very interesting experiment/research** (**delete as appropriate) when using a Libre, so that the full track could be followed.

At the beginning of my T2 living, I experimented with pasta, whilst dining out with friends. I had never really cared for pasta, so T2 or not, quite an irregular meal, but interesting nonetheless. My findings were the rise was slow, but not very high, but it just stayed there for hours on end.

As usual, the caveat is we're all different, but should you choose to repeat your research, I'd be inclined to encourage you to test very regularly for 24 hours - hourly as a minimum in waking hours and in the sleeping hours if you wake.

Of course, that could just be the data monster in me looking for lots of information.

When I used a Libre I found I had two small peaks for some meals, but it always came down within two hours. I also saw strange drops shortly after I started eating, then it would start rising again between 30 minutes and an hour. Haven’t got a clue why that happened - almost as of my body was reducing BG right away.

I have "trained" my local fish and chip shop to cook me a lightly battered fish and to provide me with a "mini" chips, about 1/3 of their standard small portion. They also wrap them separately and put them in a paper rather than plastic bag. Result is fish and chips rather than a soggy steamed mess and no unwanted spike in blood glucose, even with the current no gliclazide regime.

We recently enjoyed literally the best F&C we've ever had in our lives! Only found out afterwards - from someone else who lives in the area - it is an award winning shop. (Stoney Stanton)

Does anyone have a recipe for hot-cross buns using almond flour please? We have all the other bits and bobs, just need to know how to use them.

Further to the original post - I haven't had a reading higher than 5.4 over the last three days now.
I've been testing before meals, after meals and two and three hours afterwards and this morning I tested after waking up and getting up and before breakfast and it was 5.4 which for me is unheard of.

I've been bang on 5.4 for the last five readings until just now (three hours after last having a 2g carb chocolate milkshake) when my bloods were just 5.2. Usually for me over the last few years if I go a while between meals my sugars go up instead of down and my morning reading is usually six-ish at best and more often than not in the sevens.

I have no idea what is going on - maybe my machine is faulty? Seems too good to be true although I do feel a bit more well than I have done for a while. Might it be menopause finally kicking in I wonder? Who knows - I certainly don't.

It is a fact that low carb suppresses insulin response.
The fact you had such a normal reaction is excellent, I'd be tempted to stretch eating a normal amount of carbs for the usually suggested three days, and see what readings you get.

I had a 'normal for me' lunch of half a ribeye steak with a big pile of lettuce and avocado and radishes and half a tomato in vinaigrette followed by a dessert of three tablespoons of double cream, monk fruit drops sweetener and a dash of caramel flavouring and a teaspoon of cocoa powder with decaf coffee to drink.

I dosed off while meditating at five and just tested after waking and had a reading of 5 !!!

I think I will try eating a quarter of a pitta bread with some butter and cheese and see what happens.

I have been adding a little bit of carbs back in here and there.
The last couple of days I made real bread with wheat to use up some flour in the back of the cupboard and had a small slice with a meal two days running.
It seemed to improve my levels if anything.
I have been consistently getting low 5 to mid 5 readings throughout the day. When I ate a large slice without a meal it went up to 7 in the first hour and then dropped back to 5.6 and stayed there for the day.
So it looks like I may have moved to another consistent stage in my diabetes journey.
I won't be eating bread again though because while my blood sugars were okay it gave me a crampy tummy so I don't think my body liked it even if my taste buds were okay. I didn't really enjoy it as much as my keto loaves so I will stick with making them once the bag of flour is used up and I won't buy any more.

I find in the evening, when I get back from work if I chill on the sofa (i.e. have a little nap) my BG reading drops into the 4s and low 5s when I do a pre-meal test.

Great news!

This is absolutely true…. I also experienced this… I introduced some carb into my menu once in every week and my insulin response have increased tremendously. There haven’t been any research about this phenomenon but I think it high time some research is being carried out on this.

Hardly 'just outside' but not massively far away - the other side of the A5, the other side of Hinckley, so defo in Leicestershire whereas Cov although now in West Mids, was always in Warwickshire before!

There is 'Stoney Stanton Road' which is well known in Cov itself - but from beautiful downtown Bedworth, in the wrong direction for us to use it to go to SS ! 🙂

Coventry was actually a county (County Corporate) in its own right for centuries before being merged back with Warwickshire (Medieval walled city was the 'County Town' and a number of villages that are now suburbs were in the county) when the Rotten Boroughs were sorted out. West Midlands County only exists in name, the city is effectively a unitary authority as there is no 'West Midlands County Council'.

Stoney Stanton road. Lovely. Lived off it when I was a student! What a dump.

ROFL - I cannot disagree with any of that! Pete used to read meters (for Siemens, not the Gas or Elec Boards) and he was forever telling me about the 'gardening' efforts (growing exotic species indoors) of students - some of em used to go into a blind panic when he rapped on the door, used to tell em, 'All I'm here for is to read the numbers on the meter, not interested and don't even see anything else mate! Tunnel vision, me.'

But it is good for industrial quantities of Asian spices and fab Naan breads (weep)
