Dear veganlass,

It also raises an interesting question. They claim that CVD starts when the sticky "cholesterol" (LDL) molecule adheres to the artiary wall. In other words its a simple deposition process. Why then are our veins completely free of plaques? The blood velocity is higher in arteries which would tend to scavenge the walls. The generally accepted view is that CVD starts with inflammation. Small dense LDL is nothing new.

Interesting Dodger. I for one have a low Cholesterol and has been low for many years.
 

Bumping this critically important research back up to the front.

It brings out two significant findings ...
1. the LDL of Type 2 Diabetcis is even worse that thought. It has been well known that diabetics tend to have LDL that is at the smaller,denser, more damaging end of the range now it turns out thay are even "stickier". A type of LDL called MGmin-LDL.
2. It has been known that Metformin has significant heart protection qualities ( heart disiease being the commonest complication of diabetes particularly Type 2) but is has not ben known why Metformin was beneficial in cvd. Now this research helps to explain it - Metformin stops the transition of LDL into the even more dangerous MgMin-LDL.

This research alters the terms of the debate about Cholesterol and Statins etc It more than ever emphasises that, for a Type 2 diabetic especially, getting LDL down in to normal ranges is a pressing need.
