I have been to the gp this morning blood test ect and I mentioned sometimes not being able to control my moods especially when im on my period I thought easy enough ill change my contraceptive pill but the gp has said to start taking vitamin b as it can really help with moods!!!!! This is a new one to me so was wondering what everyone thinks??? 🙂

Never heard of that personally.....

I take a multivitamin every morning though, so this might be helping me....🙂

There was a vitamin b6 (at least I think it was b6, could have been b12) craze back in the early 80s, and claims for it included saying it was a cure for PMT. It's part of the overall picture, but not the only factor. Take care with dosage though, overdoses are toxic.

Is the doctor giving to yo uo on prescription? You can't loose anything by giving it a try and if it helps that is even better

Doctors can only give precriptions for vitamins in cases of proven vitamin deficiency. So, while vitamin B (of which there are several types, all with different properties - B1 thiamine, B2 riboflavin, B3 niacin, B5 panothenic acid, B6 pyrodoxine, B7 biotin, B9 folic acid, and B12 cobalamins or cyanocobalamin) may help, you should discover which one the doctor meant, and not expect a prescription.
By the way, the number following B should be subscript in each case, but it's not possible to format replies like that - of if it can be done, I haven't discovered how.

Deficiency in vitamin B6 is known to result in depression, among other symptoms, including dermatitis, hypertension (raised blood pressure), water retention, and elevated levels of homocysteine.

No iv not got it on prescription it was just some advice so iv bought some.... However I just got the one that says vitamin b I didnt think about what type :/ im going to give it ago and see what happens. Im only taking one a day so no chance of a overdose 😉. I was being curious to see if anyone had heard this before I didnt think vitamins could help with such things but im willing to try 🙂

I'm not sure what the dosage is supposed to be for Vitamin B pills but just be aware that for some people the rda can be too much - I took a 1 a day pill of Vitamin C a few years ago and ended up quite poorly as it was too much for me even though the rda was 1 per day.

You can't really overdose on vitamin C - any excess will be excreted in urine, so it can be useful if you want to increase acidity of urine to prevent / treat urinary tract infections. However, that's not to say that people can't experience problems with RDA doses of vitamin C.

It is possible to overdose with vitamin B3 niacin (can cause skin rashes, liver damage, digestive problems), B6 pyridoxine (can cause nerve damage) and B9 folic acid (can cause digestive problems).

So, best keep to doses recommended on bottles of vitamins.

Well I didnt realise how much was involved in the vitamin b im taking what it says but if I start to have any side effects ill be straight off it and back to the drawing board. Thanks everyone 🙂

I had exactly the same problems for years and years tried B6, no effect. I was then diagnosed and got my blood sugar on kilter and the mood control and depression went never to return except if I'm not testing much for some reason a slight of of mood tells me to test and my sugar control is going.
