Hi guys,
I am on Novorapid & Lantus insulin. I generally have 6 units of rapid at breakfast & lunch, 11 units at evening meal. My nurse told me to try to keep my blood sugars between 5 and 7 readings, 4 to 8 as the most. I am 62 and 10 stone. I am a gardener, retired and in good times my wife and I are walkers. I struggled to keep my blood sugars within those limits and have the odd double figure. I also have quite a few low figures. I am an active guy sometimes doing some heavy tasks but other times just pottering about - that`s gardening. I take 1 metformin tab at lunch. I do find it hard to put on weight. I lost 2 and a half stone when I was diagnosed.

Have you been given info about carb counting or just told to inject the same at each meal?

Hi Adehem - are you recently diagnosed? - cos it sounds to me that either it is only recently, or you have only very recently started using insulin - or alternatively it isn't an expert that's been advising you! All of what you mention so far is relatively easily overcome on an ongoing basis, providing YOU get more expert advice anyway - so more info please and let's jointly get started on sorting your diabetes out.

Sorry to hear you are finding it tricky to keep your BG readings in range @Adehem

Fixed doses for each meal work best with very regular meals, with a consistent carbohydrate content, and very even levels of activity each day - which doesn’t sound like the way you live your life.

Have you had any help with adjusting doses yourself? Or been offered and support or education such as an online course?

I did an expert class which showed us about a food diary. I did it for nearly 2 years and it got me to learn about carb counting. It also got me to see that we eat pretty much the same stuff over a few weeks. I don`t really count the carbs now because I am used to the meals we eat. I did not get diabetes till I was 60 and believe I am 1.5. I am due to see a consultant to test if I am type 1. The nurse will then send me on a different course.
