Waiting for an appointment to see my diabetic nurse but thought I would just ask for some views first. After speaking to the nurse last week it looks as though I may have some insulin resistance. Yes I do need to lose a bit of weight BMI 27.5 but after low carbing for some weeks Iam still having to take what I consider to be large amount of novorapid just to get me through the day.
If I do decide to have what I consider to be a high carb meal which is not that often ie about 40g then I seem to be having to make sometimes 2 correction doses to cover it post meal.(eg 6 units pre meal and say 6+6 post meal). For a zero carb meal I usually take 3 units. Dose of Levemir is rising as well from 26 units a few weeks ago to 30 units. It has been put to me that an option may be for me to take metformin which may help with the weight loss and also reduce the amount of insulin I take.
Wondered if anyone else has had this problem with insulin resistance and how it was treated.
Been Type 1 since 1993.

Hi ya, i also take metformin as well as novarapid and levimer. I take 3000mg of metformin a day. This was started 2 years ago after i had my son to help me loose weight and to reduce the amount of insulin taken. I take 26 units of levimer at night and my units during day of novarapid are usually 12/12/10! I do try to exercise at least 3/4 times a week and having 4 kids im pretty active anyway. It is not easy getting a balance, im attending my gp weekly just now who is keeping close eye on my doses and he tweeks them sometimes and i attend the clinic at hospital every 3 months as i was having bit of trouble with control recently but it has certainly got alot better with the constant monitoring. good luck with your appointment🙂

Thanks Gerryberry.

Feel as though Iam fighting a losing battle at the moment. And feel as though Iam a failure. Has the metformin helped and aided your weight loss. Hate it when people tell me it's what I should expect having had 3 children and not getting any younger (37) oh and of course I'am diabetic.

hi, your certainly not a failure but i totally understand how you feel as i often get so frustrated with trying to manage kids, home, work etc and of course diabetes......i often think i dont have time for it lol. i would say the metformin has helped in many ways as i would prob be on more insulin if not taking it, i still find it hard to shift weight, it is coming off slowly, like everything else you need to work hard at it and sometimes i just cant be bothered and often have few days off the healthy eating and exercise but i soon get back on track because i realise how better i feel when working at it. my last hba1c was 7.4. has the doctor not offered to give you 'reductil' or 'exenicol or orlistat' (not sure of spelling)?that is also an aid for helping to loose weight!! be worth asking about. it is just constant work but u will get there i keep telling myself that😛 Im 30 so not far behind ya😉keep close contact with the diabetic team too!! and dont be so hard on yourself:D

Kezza, do you split your Levemir?
If not that might be your problem as it does not last 24 hrs with most people.
If you sort your basal out 1st the carb ratio will follow.
Even if you eat no carbs you will still need insulin to cover protiens and fat.
