Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello, I'm new here and hoping to get some good advice.
I'm type 2 and take Metformin which for a few years seemed to keep me ok but over the last few months my diabetes seems to have really become a big issue and I was regularly getting plus 20 levels.
The hospital have put me on insulin, a Humulin Kwikpen on a dose of 10 units in the morning and 10 in the evening, this has helped and seems to bring me down to an average of 15 reading but that's too high still obviously.
I'm 53, male and slim and curious to know the kind of doses that are common and what kind of readings I could realistically achieve?
any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Michael.

Hi. It's possible you are not T2 but Late onset T1 (aka LADA). The fact that you are slim is a pointer. Ask the GP for the two tests for T1 which are GAD and C-Peptide. If you find the twice-a-day insulin doesn't give you the control you need, do ask to be changed to the Basal/Bolus regime with two insulins. The Basal is a once or twice a day long-acting and the Bolus is for meals and adjusted for the carbs in the meal. It's difficult to say what level you will get with either regime but the aim is to stay below 10mmol as far as you can. Keep the carbs down in your diet to help reduce BS.

That's really helpful Dave, I will look into this as I've always doubted my T2 diagnosis.
I will definitely proceed as you suggest, thanks so much.
