Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been on a DAFNE course and adjust my dosage of Humalog to my meals. However, I usually stick to the same diet at home, so use 9 or 10 units for breakfast, 8 for lunch and 12 for dinner. After twenty years my requirement (to keep my readings within range) suddenly increased six months ago to double dose for the same effect. My doctor said there was no need to worry, as he has a lady who takes 100 units a day. It worries me that I need all this insulin (plus 14 unit of Lantus insulin each night). I am classed as type 2. Can anyone advise if this change is normal, and whether type 1 users use this higher dosage as normal? It is actually running at two and a half times my old dose now.

Hi and welcome to the forum 🙂

I think most of us Type 1's here use Novorapid for our meals and the majority seem to be a 1 unit to 10g carbs

Type 2's often need a higher dose I believe due to insulin resistance although I could be wrong
xx

Yes I agree with @Kaylz - typically doses for T2 on insulin are higher than those for T1 (though everyone is different, of course). If part of the T2 involves insulin resistance, then the injected insulin will not be being used efficiently, just as the body’s own insulin isn’t being used effectively

Hi John44 welcome to the forum. We all need as much insulin as we need , so please don’t worry about the doses.
Those of us with T2 on insulin do tend to need more units than people with T1 , that is because the cause of T1 is very different from T2.
I have only been on insulin a couple of years and my insulin doses esp basal (long acting) Insulin has varied greatly , I initially started off on 20 units , but it gradually came down to 4 units a day it’s gone up a bit recently to 5.5 units a day. I know that is very low for someone dx as T2 , my mealtime Insulin Novorapid has only varied a little but we are all very different.

Are you on a Basal Insulin (background / long acting) Insulin, Basal Insulin is taken once or twice daily , this is to cover the glucose our liver puts out between meals to keep our organs and brain fed. or other diabetic medications.

Hi. As others have said there is no standard amount of insulin even for T1s. Have you gained weight since on insulin? If so then you will have developed some or more insulin resistance and in a vicious circle. If this is the case, then reducing your carb intake will break that loop.

Hi John from another John.

As regards to the amount of insulin being taken it is as already said it's different for every one. I have been diabetic for 15 years now and after all that time my needs have increased, My doses for Insulartad are 200 units per day split 100 am and 100 pm, and over the course of the day my Novorapid averages about150 units. And at 80 years of age I still feel alive 😱:D.
