Hiya,
I've been a type 1 for 23 years. Control has been on and off but haven't been in a great 'place' recently and last hbA1c was 9.0.

Anyway, I've been on a pump for the last 9 years. Consultant last week wants me to start on Metformin alongside my insulin pump.

I've never heard of Metformin alongside insulin in type 1's? Just wanted to ask if anyone's done this and how it was etc?

I'm 28, mother of two (2&3) and normal(ish) weight for my height.

Thanks in advance.

Marie xx

Hi Marie, what's your total daily dose of insulin like? There are quite a few Type 1s who are prescribed metformin as it can help reduce insulin resistance, therefore requiring lower doses. I believe it works in the gut to reduce absorption of carbs and on the liver to reduce glucose output 🙂

Hi. I'm on metformin as well as in insulin. Im multiple injections but starting the pump soon.

The normal metformin made me I'll, but I'm now on slow release. It's amazing. Such a difference to me. Doesn't work with everyone apparently.

Up until 6 years ago, I was classed as Type 2, insulin dependent and on slow release metformin. Folllowing a blood test, I was declared Type 1 and attended a DAPHNE course where I discovered other type 1's didn't take metformin. I queried why I was on metformin at my next clinic appointment, and they suggested I came off it and see what happened. I stopped taking it for a couple of weeks, and my blood sugars rose, so I guess I might be insulin resistant.

Hi Marie,
I take 1000mg a day (previously 2000mg) to help with my insulin resistance but it has made no difference to my insulin needs, I probably need 100-120 units a day. My Gp says that it will do me no harm and studies have suggested that metformin can be beneficial. So I am still taking it 3 years on.

It does help a lot of T1s and some it doesn't. The only way to find out - is to try it ! :D
