went to my dr yesterday cos of my insect bite on my hand wos getting worse she sade l should go strat to a&e and get a antiebotic drip in my arm when l got there dr sade no you dont need thatand sent me home with antiebotics ,l am so fed up with medical heath ,if they cant get it right what chance do we have, l am so angry right now

To be fair if the doctors don't know what kind of insect bit you it is difficult to treat bites sometimes. They can swell because of your body trying to fight infection too. The good thing is you have been given antibiotics to take home to take. I have never been given antibiotics for a bite and I was once bitten on the back of the leg by a Cleg. That bite took 2 months to stop weeping and had a constant scab...yuck! When A&E Departments are busy sending people home with the antibiotics is a lot easier than having someone taking a cubicle space up. Intravenous antibiotics are generally only used for people who have infection which could potentially affect their health to the point of being life threatening. If I were you Rosie, I'd take the antibiotics regularly and complete the course and of course keep the bite clean. Hope it gets better soon 🙂

Hi Rosie, I think you have to give it a few days before you're likely to see the swelling go down. The antibiotics will help if there is any infection, but the swelling might simply be a reaction to the bite, and these do take at least a week to go down. Try and avoid the temptation to rub or scratch it 😉
