Inject before meal started by Ruth Goode and read the post below

Hi we were always told 10-15 mins before a meal which we do unless eating out

which lead me to wanting to ask how long before a meal when you're eating out does anyone test and then inject?

my son tests about 5 mins before food should be due and then injects at the table when the food arrives so we can guess how much to inject- hope this is the ok thing to do- we always give a 2 hr gap before bedtime test

I do much the same. Except I don't test until I've guessed the carbs due to the bolus calculator on the Aviva Xpert. But the principle is the same. 🙂

Some people will inject a small bolus up front so they cover it if need be by a bread roll or couple of jelly babies if the food's late. But it ensures there's some active insulin before eating.

Personally, on the very few occasions I eat out, I wait until I see my food before injecting so that (a) there can't be any risk of delays between injecting and eating and (b) so I can see the size of the portion before deciding how much to inject.

When eating at home, and there's no risk of delay, I do inject say 15 mins before eating.

I agree if I'm eating out I test and inject when my meal is placed in front of me!

I used to the inject as normal until I realised how easy it can go wrong...

It was my twin sister wedding, we had asked the head waiter to warn us 30 minutes before serving the sit down meal due to needing to take our insulin! He gave us the nod! we injected and waited for us all to be called to the table to sit down for our meal!

45 minutes later, still hadn't been called so ventured off to find out when etc! This time the head waiter was quite shirty with us... So we gave him an option start serving or call out the paramedic's out!

So since, wait until I see my food!

When eating out we are usually on holiday in Greece. I test just before we leave the apartment and we walk to the Taverna. We order, have a non carb starter and a glass of wine then, and only then when the food arrives do I do the injection in my thigh as we are usually in shorts. If I think I havnt had enough carbs we order a sweet.

In Crete, I've frequently given up bolusing for breakfast and lunch LOL - until about halfway through the second week when I evidently become acclimatised and start needing to jab again.

Wherever I am 'out' I never jab till it's on the table in front of me, been had like that too many times.
