Injecting in public

I try to inject when I am on my own. I've had a number of bad experiences where people have shouted at me even though I was injecting discreetly. As if having diabetes isn't hard enough! The person who shocked me the most was my partners step-grandmother (who's sister is type 1), she told me it was dirty and that I had to use the family bathroom or go outside to inject. Another time I was in a restaurant with friends who brought along another friend who continued to tell me all night how sorry she was and how terrible my life is! Thanks a bunch! I know!

It is indeed completely unacceptable of her to even think that. She clearly has issues and needs some education on the subject.

Thankfully most people don't even notice.🙂

What happens at these meetings?

We just meet up - in varying numbers at any one time depending on who can make it or when/where it is - it's a mutual support group I suppose and it's nice to put faces to those who are just names on here most of the time.

Yep as Faith has mentioned. I haven;t been to one but planning to go to the next one in Sept, in Birmingham.

I imagine it will be quite theraputic as there will be plenty of diabetic talk, a chance to share and learn about T1 & T2, to have a joke and tell diabetic quirky tales! ...and the chance to test and inject in force!!!!!😛

Carol always injected in private (except at home, unless we had visitors), which meant she had to go to the toilets. Although, even if she wanted to inject at the table, it would have been a bit difficult, as she used to inject in her legs. So unless she injected through her trousers, she had to leave. I could never persuade her to inject in her tummy.

Only a month before pumping, she had to inject in an extreeeeemly busy train. Luckily she wore ripped trousers. As the train was very full, I told Carol to sit in the only free seat available. She insisted I'd tell the lady next to her what she was going to do. The lady wasn't in the slightest bothered and continued to read her book🙂

Carol and I went to the York meet. Carol was very interested to see nearly everyone testing and injecting before the meal. She was also very surprised to see Type2s injecting.

Someone else earlier in the thread mentioned injecting through clothes...

...I've been told very sternly and also again during DAFNE to not do this as transferred dirt, fabric fluff gets pulled through as well as giving less mm to go into the subcantenous tissue. (I suppose makes sense if thick jeans or trousers)

Not that my comment makes any difference to your Carol now she's pumping! Rock on!

LOL, Suze🙂. Carol never injected through clothes. We were told the same reason why not to...

I actually asked Carol what she'd have done, had she not worn ripped trousers. She said she would have fought her way to the toilets. I can tell you that that wouldn't have been easy

YAY for pumping, we are loving it!

I've said it before, but I've always injected through clothes and never had any problems in 33 years.

Wearing long sleeved shirts and trousers made it near impossible to inject without either using abdomen every time or going through clothes. I used to use 12mm needles at one time, then 8mm, so depth wasn't an issue.

Maybe I've got a special immune system. 🙄
