Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all
I'm type 2 I take tablets the problem I have is I had a stroke in Nov 2018 . My ex partner being the nice lady she is decided I was no use anymore as I couldn't work so she locked me out in august . I have been staying in a hostile since . Now the hostle has gone into shut down due to this virus . Now I'm being moved to a bed sit so I can self isolate properly . Unfortunately I not due to be paid until the 13 of next month and have nothing to move in with at all and the hostel will no longer be providing Meeks from Monday . Any ideas as to any help I can get out there as I've tried everything I can think off and I just keep hitting dead ends .

Sorry to hear of the challenges to are facing Shaun - was that part of your message autocorrected? As I cant quite work out what it means.

Have you got a foodbank local to you? Or any local charities that offer free meals to people that need them?

When does your move to the bedsit take place? Are you able to cook if you can get access to ingredients?

On the diabetes side, you don't need to fully isolate, just be careful about 'social distancing' as described here:

What is social distancing?
Social distancing measures are steps you can take to reduce the social interaction between people. This will help reduce the transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19).
They are:
  1. Avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). These symptoms include high temperature and/or new and continuous cough
    1. Avoid non-essential use of public transport, varying your travel times to avoid rush hour, when possible
    2. Work from home, where possible. Your employer should support you to do this. Please refer to employer guidance for more information
    3. Avoid large gatherings, and gatherings in smaller public spaces such as pubs, cinemas, restaurants, theatres, bars, clubs
    4. Avoid gatherings with friends and family. Keep in touch using remote technology such as phone, internet, and social media
    5. Use telephone or online services to contact your GP or other essential services
Everyone should be trying to follow these measures as much as is practicable.
We strongly advise you to follow the above measures as much as you can and to significantly limit your face-to-face interaction with friends and family if possible, particularly if you:
  • are over 70
    • have an underlying health condition
    • are pregnant
This advice is likely to be in place for some weeks.
Handwashing and respiratory hygiene
There are general principles you can follow to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:
  • washing your hands more often - with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitiser when you get home or into work, when you blow your nose, sneeze or cough, eat or handle food
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • avoid close contact with people who have symptoms
  • cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin and wash your hands
  • clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home

Hope this helps

Hi again. @ShaunR69 ..... Im appalled and sorry to hear your accommodation is changing in that way- It doesnt seem right the Hostel let you go without proper support or finances in place to tide you over. I worked for one in London back in early 2000. That would never have happened there. Have you tried the Benefits Office for an emergency payment. or Citizens Advice Bureau. The local Council Offices. Social workers/Doctors - someones got to do something about this to get the ball rolling.

Yes tried all that food banks are running short . I can't get help from UC I'm still fighting them for money owed since Feb 2019 . I've been living on £22 a month since Aug when my ex locked me out and UC are snowed under short staffed and concentrating on getting the people that are being laid off now . The fact I've been fighting over 12 months for what I should be getting didn't seem to matter . When your a 51 yr old single man with no dependants your low priority . The hostels are getting ready to be snowed under and me not due to be paid for 3 weeks isn't there problem . I understand we as a nation are going through unprecedented times and everyone is busy dealing with what's going on . But being in a bed sit from Monday isolated with all my health problems and disabilities isn't REALY appealing I won't even have a Tv or radio . I feel like I'm moaning when the whole country is going through tough times I guess I just need a good old moan and blow off some frustration and steam

I'm guessing I just have to suck it up and next stroke I have they will have to sort something before they release me from hospital . See there's always hope for the future

@grovesy ...Yes, although council offices are physically closing, their website are still up and running with info.
@ShaunR69 ...Have you tried the local church. They do great works for and around their community and you dont necessarily need to be actively religious. Maybe an Idea? They could set you up with some kind of help/assistance. You wont know unless you ask. Try everywhere, Ask your Doctor to get social services involved. I know all this is very frustrating and makes you angry, but you have to find the strength to keep knocking on doors. I wish you all the best. Please be safe.

Yes I know the website is open, though assume one I the posters position might have limited access to internet.

I am really really sorry to hear what you are going through Shaun. It must be really difficult for you.

Hope you can find some way through to get the support you need - financial, practical and emotional.

Keep plugging away and looking for opportunities - maybe give citizen’s advice another go? Lots of new measures are being announced every week to support people through this difficult time, so keep trying... just because there didn’t seem to be help available last week doesn’t mean something hasn’t emerged and could be available to you now.

Hang in there matey.

Good afternoon @ShaunR69 ... I have just this min had an information leaflet through my door from my local council...informing us to look out for neighbours/vulnerable. More importantly for you, the leaflet reminds us' local charities' are there to help everyone (which can be contacted via the council website). The leaflet also points to the use of Social Services and CAB (Citizens Advice Bureaux) the latter are coordinating local charities.

When you are next online here and read this message, please lease do try to reach out to one of these establishments too. i have mentioned other options in post above - they are ALL there to help people who are in the greatest of difficulties.
